How do you reach yours?

I have just spent 15 hours cleaning the outside of the new Motorhome.
6 hours on Friday and 9 hours on Saturday.
I haven't even started to do the roof yet which I know should be done first but I cannot reach it.

The roof is much higher than my last van so my steps are too short.
This got me thinking about how other people reach their roof and the underside of the overcab.

I wouldn't worry about the roof of a new Motorhome for at least 12 months, Mark!
What I used in the past was a 6 ton dumper full of stone and I climbed up on it and cleaned the roof from there. You possibly could get a small bit of scaffolding.

Well done mark, that's dedication for ya

Don't polish the roof though or the satellites will pick it up from space

I have a ladder with 2 lengths of pipe insulation doubled up to act as a cushion so the ladder does not scrape the side of the van, then extendable handle soft brush and I avoid standing on the roof at all costs,
That's what I do,

I think you should have just said " a few hours".

As has been said above, an extendible ladder or steps with something on the legs to stop marking the van, whether or not you stand on the roof is up to you, I wouldn't but at my weight I had better not

Excellent Reply Ally :D

It would be a weekly wash for Hessy - an "all rounder" including arches etc: O-)

I got one of the Aluminum pop up/ down extendable ladder thingy-ma-doodle-job and made a cushion rest from old cushions for placing over the top rung- although resting it against the top sides is fine as long as the awning slit is not touched. ^_^

I leave the bucket of soap mix on the ground and use the extendable wash brushes as previously suggested to rub down the roof and tie the hose through the top rung to wash down. You can reach and dunk it to bring soapy water to the roof.

I use 4 points (2 Each side of the unit) so to cover the roof and ensure the crevasses are done along the roof lights etc.

I used the GRP Boat finish lacquer to T-cut and resin coat the roof - 2 coats last summer which was applied and buffed with a lot of luck so not to slide off the roof :'( as i did it all while lying on my stomach precariously :o at points especially when buffed as thought i was going off the roof "like a penguin off an ice berg"

It did nearly a full year now and still retains a good sheen -thank god there is no trees overhead where i park, or telephone/electric lines for birds to aim at hessy as target practice - so that's a good help in keeping it clean.

I'll get a couple of good coats on again this year and also replace the silicon seals around the openings. Does anyone else use Glycerine on their rubber seals?? To keep it spongy?

I'm glad i don't have the overhanging bed units that you other Criacers may have as i am sure it is so very different to clean in comparison to Hessy's roof - May i suggest a course in rock climbing  , a hard hat :-/ and watching Mission Impossible a few times :fgrin:

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I have the lidl stage thing but it is only a meter high and that will not let me reach the middle of the roof with the sponge.

BRUSH? Nope
Polishing sponge and three stages of polish. Then the final seal.

There is no way I would leave the roof undone as it takes the worst of the weather and the sides were not anywhere close to sealed.

The cleaning continues.

And we thought it was only mark

Glycerine on rubber seals will attract dust and stuff if you don't rub it off after a day or so I find,
