Been told I am looking at around £200 for a spare ignition key with chip
Has anybody had to buy one and/or what the cost would be in Ireland,
£200 seems a right rip-off to me

Daughter lost her Punto key and it was £300 but gave discount down to £250 as it was only 3 months old. I enquired of an independent and they were £280 and that was cost to them.

Years ago we had a Mitsubishi Lancer and I refused to pay the rip off charge. I got a couple of ordinary keys cut and taped the original inside the steering column near the ignition. This way the computer could read the chip in the key and we had no problems using the normal keys in the ignition. The only drawback was we had no remote locking / unlocking.

There is somewhere that will clone the key with proper code etc, I'll try and remember where it was and get back to you.

This is a post I put on two years ago

Subject: Ducato Key Code - Posted: 25.05.2012 - 20:56 - 1
The keys of my camper were lost in 2007 and the previous owner bought one new key and got it coded and this wiped out the code on the two old keys. i recently took the van for a servise and timing belt to the dealer that sold it to the last owner and he found the old keys, gave them to me and sent me to the locksmith that previously coded the new key for him. He was unable to code them and sent me to a Fiat dealer who also was unable to code them as he said the ecu reconised them and for security reasons would not let him code them. my question is there any way around this as two new keys are nearly 400 euro......... Thanks for any help.

When I had the Swift Bolero I which was on the Fiat Ducatto I paid £375 for a new key. It's a total rip off nd it took ages to get it as well.

Did you try your local shop that cuts keys? When I got my campervan two or three years ago, there was only one key with it. I went to Henderson's in Donegal town to get another one cut. They told me that my key was chipped so it would be expensive for them to cut another. They charged me 50 Euro for the new key and cut it there and then. I thought that was expensive until I read the posts on here.

Was that for the van or the MH ken? Pretty steep either way, would it have cost you much to get an extra one cut at the same time,

Keys and fobs

 ·

On the subject of keys and fobs the last time I had to buy a new fob for my Hyundai Sonata it cost me well over £100 from the local dealer.
Yesterday I had one fob not working and the other one only locking the car which meant opening with the key which put the alarm off.
Not wanting to spend another £100 on a new fob, I went to Hobson Electronics Dungannon and they repaired the two fobs for £30. I thought that was very reasonable.

Some of the locksmiths said that they could do it, but when they saw the key said dealer only, problem is no dealer in the West.

That is the going rate, had to get a replacement fob for a fiat punto 2013, and guess what £300. Apparently there are two levels of security in them apart from the remote bit.

You might be better off with half that security, Thieves are breaking into Houses now and putting the residents in danger to get the Keys.

That's why leave the keys beside the door then no need for them to come on into the house

I did in fact manage to find a mobile Auto key cutter which worked out at less than £200 almost half that Fiat wanted, and he came to my home so I didn't have to drive to the Fiat Garage (50 mile round trip for me to a Fiat Commercial dealer)
The reason that normal key cutters CANNOT do it for a Fiat is because the coding cannot be read from the key but only from the vehicle. In fact he told me reading the key can wreck it Mobiles are usually cheaper, anyone who sells cars will normally have a mobile company they use (unless they are main dealers) I got the name from a local car dealer.

re leaving the keys handy as I said in a previous post (Under Alarm) I believe that despite all the electronics you can add to the vehicle physical in your face old fashioned if you like will put off all but someone who already has a buyer for your vehicle.
I stated
I fitted an alarm to mine and also a personal tracker
The alarm makes on hell of a racket and sets off the lights flashing which is pretty hard miss if it is being driven along will admit however it was a sod to fit
The tracker is a simple unit that you send a message to and it sends a message back with coordinates

Also have a locking steering wheel camp I believe in belt and braces

AND on top of that when at home I add
http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/…kA/140.jpg
(if somebody can get the picture on the post please do so and let me know how)

Both clamps came from charity shops for less than £15.00, they may look a bit tatty but they take a lot of time to remove both even with the keys
