Problem with Thetford Flush

 ·

I blew about three 3 amp fuses on the flush of my Thetford C200 toilet. I am not great with electrics so thought I was going to have to spend more than a penny to get it sorted!! Not looking forward to the delay as every good motorhome/caravan technician is extremely busy at present.

I had had the van out a few times over the winter but not used the toilet over that time.

I rang my local technician Simon at Leisure Technical Solutions (Dromore, N. Ireland). Great service as usual, he diagnosed a probable seized pump and told me how to free it. Great advice given for free when other dealers could have fixed it but charged for labour etc.

Speedy fix which cost Simon money but he will get it back in buckets with his superb attitude to customer service

With added help from Zappysblog and his brilliant, clear photographs of how to replace the pump, I had the spindle free in less than an hour.

It was also a great way to clear all the black gunk out and as I write the tank is soaking in Puriclean for a few hours after a good scrub.

Thanks to both Simon and Zappy for saving me loads of money, time and inconvenience (not a pun).

Davy

Hi Davy,

I had the same problem with my pump had to free it 3 times last year.
I eventual gave up and fitted a new pump.
It was suggested to me that the cause may have been using the pink flush fluid in the top tank.
I stopped using it and now use a dishwasher tablet from Lidl.
My toilet is now sparkling clean, like flushing with soapy water and no problems with the pump.
I understand some members use these tablets instead of the blue fluid in the bottom tank as I do, but with a little blue fluid aswell.

I didn't think it was dish washer tabs.

I am back on the blue but keep a small box of washing machine tabs in case I run out. Use the right blue and we need very very little of it and we find it a lot better than the tabs.

I tend to use blue or pottikem when I know I'll be emptying at a site with the chemical disposal but I pop in aldi's liquid tabs when on way home as I have a septic tank and it wouldn't work too good with the blue going in,

Elsan Organic toilet fluid is OK for your septic tank.
The lorry driver who empties my tank once a year owns a caravan himself and strongly recommends you don't use the ordinary fluid if you are emptying at home.
The Caravan Club C.L. owners don't like the ordinary stuf as their elsan points usually run into their own tanks.
