Good question, I don't know the answer but I do know people who use their van regularly and leave food in the fridge and connected to the ecu all of the time when not touring.

I have never had a problem doing it ,but it may depend on your particular charging system

What I was led to believe and I have never heard anyone disagree.

If your Van is quite modern then yes it's ok as it has a charger that switches off when charge is full and kicks back in again when it runs down.

If you have an older van, and I think it is older than 1990, then it is more than likely not ok.

I keep my van plugged in all the time but sometimes switch off the battery charger, this lets the solar panel and batteries work together and maybe a day or so before we head off again i would switch the charger back on again.
Have been doing this for some time now and it seems to work for me.

With a solar panel i would only connect to mains for a couple of hours before heading off, this allows the fridge and freezer to cool to make sure the ice cubes are ready when arrival on site. Also switch on the water heater which means we save on gas as only a top up needed.

I've had 3 campers down the years, and they are plugged in, in my drive, 90% of the time. I've never had any problem, but I check batteries readings regularly.
