New member with a few questions

Hi all,

First post so sorry if it's all been asked several times before.

Late last year I bought our first motorhome, the deal was too good to pass up so I jumped in at the deep end, it is a 6 berth chausson flash 03, I have 3 young kids and soon found a few small issues.
I have advertised the camper for sale this weekend, if I sell I would make a few small changes to the next purchase but if not I am happy to make the most of it.

The Dinette which converts into a double berth is a bit short for adults, it is 5'5", are all dinettes this small or is mine just a bit tight? It also has 4 belts around it but I could not see 4 people seating there on a journey.

I think a double berth or u- lounge would suit the young kids better, they are two small for bunks but that said the lower bunk is easily big enough for 2 kids.

I now think now that a right hand drive will work better also as it is for weekends in Ireland , if we get to go abroad there will be an adult in the passenger seat where as at the moment we drive a car separate if it is a close location we are going too.

Now the big one, my older boy is 5 1/2 years old and has cerebral palsy, I would like to be able to widen the entrance door for a wheelchair and fit tracks for transport, has anyone seen a door widened for a chair?

Any thoughts

Thanks

Padraig

Hi Padraig,
As regards the last question, I don't think you can widen the door, but can fit a person hoist to the passenger side, transfer him from the chair onto the passenger seat, then transfer him on to his chair, should be no problem with tracking.
I met a man in Portugal last week, he told me he had a lift fitted to his van, but as his wife was asleep in the van I didn't get to see it 🇧🇭

I am sure you could get the door widened by a coach builder, but I guess it would be expensive and you would loose valuable storage space inside, I think Ken's option would probably be better. The other option would be a van conversion with a wide sliding door on the side but with two young children you would have to opt for a large Mercedes type van.

I think you will find most dinettes are for small children.

I suggest going to a dealers and having a look around at as many vans as possible, only then will you find the layout that suits and even then will have top compromise on something.

I Think the layout of ours suits two adults and two kids perfectly with plenty of storage for everyone. But it has no belted seats in the back! Only two of us so it suits us.

The main thing to remember is for every child travelling you need a seat belt.

Not in an older van though? Not saying you should carry kids without belts but I don't think the law applies to older vans. Ours is 03 and is a 4 berth with no belted seats in the back.

Is it still the case that rear facing seats don't need belts by law ?

You can get new vans which are 4 berth and no belts in the rear! If the children are 12 or under then they must be carried per the seatbelt regulations which came into force in 2006, the types vary according to the size/age of the child but definitely not on a side facing seat as they cannot contain child restraints in the event of an accident.

There is a section on the autotrail web site all about the requirements, but the site appears to down at the minute.

The thing to consider is that you would not want young children running about the van as you drive along
