Look in your vehicle manual for correct spec also,

My advise is don't go into the motor factors and ask them as they will advise what ever they think, they often get it wrong which is no good to you when damage is done,
I had an argument with one of the lads behind the counter when he advised me wrong and when I corrected him he got rightly snotty, needless to say I didn't buy my stuff from there after that,

Phone your Renault dealer or motorhome dealer if you cannot find the manual,

FatController may be able to shed some light on it for you as I think his knaus is on Renault aswell

Do you have a manual for your van as it will let you know the sae you need to get. It will probably be fully synthetic. If you don't have the manual let us know and I will check mine tomorrow

Thought you benefit from a bad luck experience I had, Mine is a 2006 Ducato so similar.
First and most important is to make sure you get the correct Oil Filter, Yes I know you are thinking does this guy think we are all Morons, but for the Ducato 2006 there are two types with different pressure release values someone fitted the wrong one to mine opened too soon and all the muck from the bottom of the sump tried to get to the Turbo which meant the oil could not Knacked Turbo but cost me over £1000 at a diesel specialist for them to find out why a van with only 23,000 was pumping out white smoke on the odd occasion.

Anyway back to the oil although for mine it states Fully syn oil they recommended and used only Shell Semi syn oil
The reason given was that fully syn oil drains fully back into the sump so if the van is not used Daily as would be expected of a commercial after a few days say a week the internal parts of the engine would not be coated and thus rust,
SEmi syn oil leaves a coating of oil on all parts so much better for a Motorhome/Camper.

Why Shell he thinks that it is the best oil there is for this type of vehicle and considering he hopefully will never see my vehicle again it wasn't because that was what he sold so could profit

It made sense to me.

I had a look at the renault handbook and it is in German! But I managed to work out that diesel engines without a diesel particle filter use 10W40 or 10W50 to spec ACEA A3/B4 and those with the DPF use 5W30 or 0W30 depending on outside temperature to spec ACEA C3, the only exception is the 2.2dCi engine with a DPF which uses a 5W40 to spec ACEA A3/B4.

I hope this helps, the volume of oil listed for the 2.5 dCi engine is 7.5L

I was told that the only way is to purchase using the Engine number.
Again I was told that ALL the oil passed through the filter and in order that youdont knacker the engine if it gets blocked there is a pressure release value. For the ducato sorry cant say for yours (but would guess it was the same, only a guess) one filter opened at 1. something bars pressure and the other at 2. something. and when it opens the oil bypasses the filter. they had fitted the lower rated filter on mine and as my engine operated at around 2 bars pressure for about 5000 miles I had in effect been driving without the oilbeing cleaned thus the sh*t that partly blocked the fine oil jets to the turbo so it was running on about 10% of it oil needs and at the speed it spins the fins had lost about 3mm from there front edge and the internal casing a similar amount, lateral movement on its shaft was nearly 5mm as the bearing where less than half the size they should have been.
I think he said that the turbo spun at over 17,000 rpm so thats going some without oil

The only outside sign surprisingly was that if you stopped say a lights you took off with a nice but short lived plume of WHITE smoke, otherwise it seemed fine to me.
Did however notice the difference when the new turbo was fitted goes a lot better now.

Will check for my engine number.Did the person who fitted your filter take any responsibility for costly mistake they made?

A good motor Factors will take your reg and advise which are the correct parts/fluids- by a good motor factors I mean the ones who sell mostly to the trade. You could always drop the oil and remove the filter and bring it with you to the motor factors. Best also to avoid the cheap oils and stick to the known brands - you can expect to pay more for a known brand but with engine oil I think its worth it.
