How often should you replace the engine fuel filter ( diesel ) do you wait until the warning light comes on or is there a time or mileage limit ??

It should be changed in the service per the handbook so anywhere between 10 and 20 thousand miles

We also change it once a year just before the Test.

Dave I think when the warning light comes on it may indicate water in the filter, it's easy to drain.
As said it should be changed at regular service intervals,

Changing a fuel filter every year is extreme, just no need with today's fuel as clean as it is, but it sure can't do any harm.

Unless you are doing big miles of course.

Replace fuel filter at 18k. and then every subsequent 18k; So replace at 18k, 36k, 54k, 72k, 90k, 108k, etc.

I change my fuel filter when i get my service every year,most service manuals state a certain mileage or once a year which would be requirement for warranty if it was ever needed.
For someone who does little miles then i can see where every year would seem to often but then on the other hand say 18,000 miles could be 5 years for that person.
Better safe than sorry as the cost of a damaged fuel pump or injectors would make the price of a fuel filter seem very cheap.

I would be more concerned about changing the engine oil than the fuel filter once a year.

Engine oil is a MUST DO at least once a year ,for the first time since i started MHing i changed it twice last year ,we got good use out of the van

I get the van services once every year at Shelbourne Motors in Portadown and the Service manager advises me what I need to do as I don't do all that big mileage and I've found it excellent. Shelbourne Motors if you have a Renault based vehicle are excellent dealers.

The guys that look after our fleet of vehicles do my servicing and I asked about changing the filters every year and their answer was if you want to waste money its up to you, they recommend going by the mileage as the yearly thing is more for the dealers to make money than do any good.

If you are playing around with BIO or heating Oil then there is a bigger need to change the filter but not with ordinary diesel.

I do not believe in wasting money but i suppose it is all about what makes people feel happy,some of you may remember a post that i made late last year about loosing a tractor and trailer,(Stolen) well i had to produce every document for that machinery from the day that i bought it to the day that i lost it.
Even at that the insurance company were beating me down,so i suppose it is down to every individual to do what they think is best.

I change mine at every annual service. The reason being that it is a simple quick release both ends on the underside of the van and the filter costs only 2.43 and adds nothing to the shipping. It's up on the lift anyway so it's an easy task.
With the hideous miles to the gallon, I often run the tank to empty, so end up drawing the dirt from the bottom of a 20 year old tank.
I usually find gunge or water in the filter, so upon deciding to replace the filter, it would be wise to factor in how often you run on a near empty fuel tank.

Some fuel filters are slightly more than a tenner, exampl, the Nissan navara I had a couple of years ago had a fuel filter which was £58 plus vat.
