insurance for newbies question

Hello Folks,

As I said before our plan is to get a panel van (as a starter) have it fitted out and use it as our main vehicle (mostly recreational). At the moment we're trying to work out insurance and the Motorcaravan Club of Ireland seem to have what suits us. It seems we need to be recommended by a current member before we can become a member. The problem is we're just new to all this and really want to get into it but don't know anyone that's a member. Is this club still in existence? There doesn't seem to be many posts on their forum since 2012. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul.

If it's just for cheaper insurance then Dolmen do a motorhome policy and I think Stewarts also do one. I personally don't do clubs but they suit others as they like the various events some of them organise. Some of the members on here are in the mccni (I think), bob and Mark are two that I can think of so they may be able to answer more specific questions about their own particular club.

Hi Controller,

Thanks for the response. We are not looking for cheap insurance - we're just looking for the correct and fair insurance for class and category of our camper van. The information out there is vague, conflicting and varied at best. We don't want to pay over the odds but we don't want to be under insured and the afore mentioned club seemed to offer something that fitted our requirements.

Paul.

As FC says there are only a few that will insure in the Republic but they are not that bad. I went with Stewarts and found them grand if you call them. I also called to say we changed the storage when we found indoor storage and they were very accommodating - however we have not had a claim and that is when you really know when you have value or not.

I don't know the club you mention in your first post. Can you supply a link?
No club that I know of supply's insurance but may have a broker they suggest members use for discount.

Dolman insurance ask for gas and electrical certificates the first time you insure a conversion with them.

I hope this helps.

Yes I am a member of it and it costs 40 euros per year. Stuart's Insurance Brokers look after it for them and I am insured with them and found them very good. Had just one claim many years ago for a windscreen on an A Class which amount to £1700 quid.

Paul that is not the Club I am with. It's the imcc link. As far as I am aware the link for the club you have does not provide insurance.

Hi Paul, when I started out motorcaravanning I was with that club.Bill Lupton was the main man to contact, give him a ring as he is very helpful and will put you on the right track.I think they use Dolmen as their insurance company(not 100% sure)

One thing to remember both Dolmen and Stewarts offer discounted hm insurance to everyone and while clubs may be able to give you a discount ask yourself how much is membership on top and will you make use of the club for other things.
