I just renewed our EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) - these used be referred to as E111 cards and give you a significant medical coverage should you need medical treatment while travelling in the EU.
As with most things these days I did this online.
But I was almost conned into using this site (which I think is a scam site)
http://www.hse-ehic.net/book.html
On this site they charge €14.95 per per person for renewal. The URL looks very official - it has "hse" and "ehic" contained in it - both terms we would expect to see.
If you follow the tab "Apply" you would apply through this site and give away your private details, name address, date of birth, social welfare number etc. etc to some company and pay them €14.95.
Luckily I checked it out by going to www.hse.ie and on that site (after a bit of searching) go to
http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/schemes/EHIC/
where you can get a new EHIC or renew an old one - totally free of charge
BEWARE of rogue sites and I think they are doing the same in other countries.
