Roadworthiness testing

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport has signed S.I. No. 710 of 2011,EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (VEHICLE TESTING) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS 2011.
The regulations include provision for the mandatory testing, from 1 March, 2012, of motor caravans.

at least we finally know where we stand on the issue we are the last in europe to bring this in even romania are years ahead of us there will be alot of us getting exercise emptying vans for the weigh in (the van not the driver weighin) :D

Has this anything to do with the VERY cheap Motorhomes appearing for sale in the South? getting shot of them before they need tested perhaps? or have I the wrong end of the stick?

Probably yes and no, I have my old Sprinter Campervan for Sale on several sites since last May and have dropped the price three times, even have it with a dealer and I still Cant sell it. I Had one offer Then he pulled out. 🇧🇭

It also has An Engineers report, With the NCT test due in March It would be hard to drop the price much further.
I think with the down turn people are not buying as much as the used to. :(

i was told by anchorpoint motorhomes that the van had to be emptied and weighed before its first test but this in not the case you just bring it along with the reg. book like nct

re testing of motorhomes.
will it include a habitation test like gas & electrics etc ?
surely those are a safety issue.

No they will not for now be looking at the interior, gas, water or electrical of the hibernation section but may do in the future there was a piece posted on boards.ie today about it ( the letters sent to all test centers ) reg s.i. no 710 of 2011 re costs glass etc etc tried to link it but failed :(
All motorhomes older 1980 are exempt first test is due on the 4th anniversary and every 2 years thereafter until 10 years old then the test is every year

I was told to empty all tanks, remove all camping gear etc.

booked mine today for 12oc tomorrow was told nothing about emptying the van while booking so ill let you know what happens

There is nothing in the regs about this.
'Motor caravans' are to be tested " at the weight presented"
There is no internal inspection of the living accommodation or storage lockers (garage) so it's irrelevant if stuff is stored there.

In fact, the test would be better carried out with the vehicle fully laden, in 'holiday' mode (tanks full included), as it is more likely to show up those being used at over their GVW (MTPLM)

I suppose i'm worrying about the weight. The GVW on the plate says 3,300kg but it's a big enough van and I only have a "B" category licence. The last thing i need is for them to weigh it and find it's over 🇧🇭

The guy did say he hadn't read the regs as they only recieved them that day.

If you ARE overloaded and you get caught at a roadside check it could work out expensive, there is also the issue of insurance not being valid.

I'm sure i'm not but as i've never weighed the van I don't know how many kg's I have to play with. Suppose i'll find out in a week or 2.

The wife and kids don't believe in travelling light ^_^

my van has passed :lol: but it was over 200 kg overweight the tester said he would let it through this time but expected in 2 yrs time i might have problems getting through i had most of our stuff in it gas., plates ,pots n pans, outdoor tables chairs etc but i dont think these came to over 200kg the tester felt alot of vans would have problems my gvw is 3500 kg and i thought the air suspension would bring it up to 3750kg but he did not think so maybe guys from NI could give us some hints on how they get there vans through weight wise if people are worried get your van weighed first its about e10 or take a risk like i did :'(

In the test manual, items 42 & 51 - reason for failure - presented axle weights exceed manufacturer's design axle weight.
Your vehicle should not have received a pass and it is an offence to use a vehicle on the public highway in an overladen condition, it can also invalidate your insurance.
So the tester did you no favour.

I'm glad he passed you eirebus but i'm a little nervous about it all now :'(

200kg is quite a lot of gear. Are you saying your van would be at or close to the GVW limit with nothing in it ?

I'll definately be doing a serious clearout before heading down O-)

Drain all the water and as little fuel as possible.
We have 220kg difference between empty and full.

I asked the guys to weight mine last year and they were quire suprised.
I was 72 kg over with a full tank of fuel and about 30 litres of water on board.

MOT in the North mustn't check the weight..

Was that with all your gear as well ?

I found some European standard online where you have to allow for 80% full tank of fuel, a driver and a couple of other bits and bobs that I can't remember.

I'll see if I can dig it out.

We have a payload of 490KG which I discovered is pretty good...

bagette has got me worried now so i thought about whats in the van so i could get it below 3500kg for next test ,fuel tank had 55l gas bottle near full ,pots pans plates then i remembered there is a safe on board who knows what that weighs ,2x100a batteries and the list goes on may have to travel in future with cup a soup and 2 packs of crisps +small bottle of water if you see skeleton driving van its only me so dont be scared :alien:

Just back from my doe test did not pass yet as the tyres did not have the ce mark so must get a report from goodyear or a tyre fitter/company stating that the are up to standard in regards weight capacity and the other problem was the reg cert did not match the vin numbers on the Rv, revenue put in a 5 where there should have been an S back in 2005 so they could not pass it even if the tyres were correct now I must take the RV into the revenue office in cork so they can check it etc etc they did put on the beam benders so now the lights are ok so some good news now to try and track down info on the tyres anyone have any ideas ?

google the spec on your tyres and then compare them to eu spec i would say there will be some difference and you will have to get new tyres you only have 3 weeks to do this then you will have to do re-test at full cost
