Chianti, Carbonara and Bellisimo are a few of a handful of words that I know in Italian :)

Which means that I have to get genned up on travelling in Italy. We booked the ferry today and will travel out on 8th March for about 10 weeks.

We have no detailed plan yet but the general intention is to travel well down - below Rome certainly - even below Naples to get to the warmer weather as I imagine that Northern Italy is cold in March.

Once down south we will spend a few weeks there and start tour slowly up to the North as the weather gets warmer. :-)

I have only been to Italy three times and even then for short business related trips so we are beginners in Italia

So we would welcome any pointers, tips, etc from anyone who has done a trip to Italy.

Cheers

Drifter that sound fab! I don't know much about Italy but I spend 2 weeks in Rome 3 years ago and it's a beautiful and interesting City. So rich in history and so many beautiful places to see and also eat. Would highly recommend that you send a few days near it but don't dare take the Motorhome in as I've never witnessed anything like the driving and parking there.

Look up the bbc bite size web site, it's for school children revising for exams so you should find something in Italian to give you a few extra words.

Yeah the BBC Language site is very good that's where I brushed up on my French. You can work at a pace that suits you and the French was divided into interactive sections lessons.

when heading south of naples Pompeii is interesting for a few hours but not in high heat,Sorrento is definitely worth a visit, gorgeous town, lovely old port and you can get a ferry to capri and iscia.I cant really say anything about Naples except that people warned us that it wasnt great. Enjoy. Paul

If you go to sorento you will love it Jack. But fly don't take the Motorhome, we drove down from Rome in a hire car and it cost us €20 day/night to park the car and another €10 if we drove to another beach. Talking of beaches we climbed down approx 400 or 500 steps to a local beach and they wanted, I think €27 euro for two beach lilos, after a fight we had to give them €20. We went across to the island of Capri which is beautiful but expensive again , two slices of pizza and two glasses of beer €30. I found it a mad place to drive in a car not to mind a Motorhome.

Hi jack
We have been to sorrento a few times we stayed at the Capri hotel in the town centre it's family run and you can walk to the shops and to the port and railway station there is a tour bus terminal where you can go on guided bus tours which include lunch for €50pp
There are great places to eat on the side streets at reasonable prices and plenty of shops to pass the time browsing if you are into that there is live music on the streets as well
Sunbathing is expensive as you have to pay to enter bathing area and pay for sunbeds

Guys that's been very helpful to us and a lot of detail. I suppose when we choose to go to such places there is always a price to pay. I still can't get my head around why anyone wants to go on a hotel holiday when we have a excellent Motorhome but maybe that's just me.

I suppose you could say the same of me having a second/holiday home in Spain, but we enjoy going there and spending time as well as travelling in the motorhome and also the occasional hotel holiday. It's horses for courses and everyone enjoys different things
