Anyone use a tow dolly for bringing a small car on tour with you ?
I am interested in purchasing or making up something .
We have a rollerteam on a transit chassis - which has a fairly long overhang from the rear axle .
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has a similar van that has a tow bar fitted
Regards
Brian

Bmurphy9 just to say if you intend to go to France forget about everything for towing a car behind a Motorhome apart from a proper trailer. The police from my experience will sift you out if you don't have a proper trailer. Others may tell you different but I'm talking from experience and went and bought a proper trailer. If you are not going to France or the Continent then there's no problem.

Same goes for Spain, there are plenty of folks who have "A" frames as well as Dolly's and it seems as long as you stay in Ireland or uk then it's fine as the law is a bit grey on the subject, it's your decision at the end of the day.

I've seen quite a few A frames in use out on the road recently. Most of them appear to be the ones available on donedeal. The type with the chain & ratchet arrangement that secures onto the lower control arms on the car. Looks good.

Blag they may look good and you'll get away with them here but go to France or any other country on the Continent and I reckon you'll get at the most 40 miles and you'll be pulled in and fined and you must detach the car from the van. Please if anyone is going to France and taking your car make sure it's on a proper trailer.

You are on the ball Jack ,, so I have altered my plan slightly ..
New plan involves buying or making or altering a car transporter trailer to make enclosed .This will help keep the car out of weather when not in use .
We have 2 small kids so I'm on the lookout for a classic mini or fiat 500.
Of course I need to fit towbar to van first ..

Even in the UK it is no longer that simple and quite a few people get pulled over.
The rules are now being unforced regarding unbraked trailers which have to be less than 750kg so many Small Cars cannot now be used with a A frame in the UK
I have found the relevant rules for the UK and attach below.
So looking at these it may be OK in the South but you could easily fall foul if you go into the North or travel to Wales,England or Scotland

Might be a good idea to put this into a reference section

David I certainly agree with that being put into a reference section. I've learned the hard way and I don't want other people making into a trap and having their holiday ruined. Really to be clear if you are going to take a car with a Motorhome then it must be on a trailer and as you say if it's over 750kg it must be braked. The French police will check the plate on the trailer and will even take you to a weigh bridge.

And don't think about buying a trailer unless it's plated for the weight, the days of the backstreet trailer makers are over as we are gradually heading towards them having to have an mot like our continental brothers
