DOE Test

 ·
Posted: 11.01.2014  ·  #1
Hi all

Just left my van (non camper) for DOE.

Failed
1.Front indicator bulbs not orange enough.

2.Black lettering on no plate not black enough.

3 Rear shocks imbalance.

I think the first 2 are a bit over the top, anyone else fail on stupid stuff?

Hi

Had one out of 3 the orange bulbs bit, keep a spare set now and change them before taking it for the test.

Didn't know about the number plate that's a new one --------so had a look on the DOE site and it does say must not be faded

the Suspension is another issue really and there place is the only ones that can test it I think?

Surely a Yellowish or Orange Flashing light means - I'm turning that way O-)

The number plate blackness is to stop you getting away with the speed cameras

Like Motorhomes are "hitting the ton" down the roads

Doe is now as bad as the Nct, I failed an Nct because of the bulbs also. My daughters car went down last year because of the size of the letters on the number plate and it passed the previous time with the same plates. I agree with safety issues but failing nct's because the counties name isn't written in small letters in Irish at the top of the number plate is pure bull.

I would guess at least.
There are a lot of cut-price MOT stations here and the strange thing is that they are very strict and fail for any minor point, this way they can get you to pay for a re-test fee and do the repairs not cheap either.
They also seem keen to put on advisories for example I had an note that Brake pads would need to be replaced 3 years on the trot until this year when the garage I use to service obtained their MOT license. I do about 8000 miles p.a. in my car so say 24,000 not having changed them and my garage tells me the pads are not yet 50 percent worn
Its good to live in Rip-off Britain

My car failed before because of the indicator bulb colour, failed twice because of the numberplate lettering being non standard, but the worst one yet was last year when it failed because the steering wheel lock wasn't working. I don't know if it ever worked from new, it's not something you check. I asked them why this was a safety issue and after much deliberation they couldn't tell me why but failed me anyway. I rang back the following day for feedback on why this was a failure issue, they told me that they still didn't know but they figured it might be a safety issue if the rear of the car was jacked up on a side cambered surface, where the car might slide and fall. I replied that they certainly were making this up otherwise manufacturers would have to put safety warnings on their vehicles tell us to remove the key and lock the steering before jacking the rear. Bull**** its all about quotas

Yeah I think a lot of it comes down to money. I'm convinced rightly or wrongly that they have to fail a certain number of vehicles each month. Just imagine how much more that brings in to them!

Some of the tests are ridiculous, when I got the van the shocks were knackered and the new ones would not arrive before the test. My mechanic said that if I washed the underside so they was no sign of leaking on the shocks that it would pass as there would be no imbalance as they were all done. Sure enough it passed.
I fitted led side markers in the running boards of the van. It's up for mot soon and even though they are not standard or a requirement I've had to replace the ones that are not working before this year's test because they will fail if they are there but not working.
Years ago I had a Brookland Capri and it failed because a suspension bump stop was missing. I went to a Ford parts place and was told it was discontinued, they advised me to remove the one on the other side and take it back for the test. It passed and continued to pass in later years

Two years ago my Citreon 2CV failed as the headlights were not properly adjusted. I told the guy they can go up and down manually but he wasn't having any of it. I brought her back 2 weeks later and I hadn't touched a thing and this time it was an older guy who knew a bit about 2CV's he lined up the machine and he said to me adjust the knob which I wanted to do the first time and she passed.

Bummer Taylor. Good luck to them testing suspension on my yoke..... Lololol

Watched a dzzzzzzope open the front bonnet on an air cooled 911 of mine once looking for the engine at it's nct. Didn't instill me with much confidence. Also on another 911 I failed due to db's at rear exhaust. Appealed it on the grounds the engine on a front engined car won't impact noise levels at test spot but a rear engined car will..... My exhaust was good, it had been tested for noise pollution at many track days and passed. I won the appeal... Often they're just spanners and if you question anything they crumble....

My transam should not pass the emissions test because she needs a rebuild as it burns more oil than petrol. It has passed this last 5 years as I have a Borla exhaust system with an electronic valve that switches between the silencer and a straight through pipe coming out through individual rear pipes. The sound is incredible but the lazy testers insert the emissions test equipment into the straight through pipe because it is closest to them, which is closed during the test. I'm not complaining

At the last mot (my first with it) they tested it as a hgv, I asked why and it's because of the size. It passed ok but I can say they fail vehicles for the most stupid reasons, as our transport manager would tell you

I always go to newtownards.
I feel that if they tell me it needs work done it should be done.

Last year they told me the Motorhome had passed the brake test but might need new rear discs soon.
I drove straight to the guys who service it and book a service and rear discs.

When they were doing it they discovered the front discs were worse than the rear. All discs and pads were replaced.

They showed me the discs which came off the van I was surprised how bad they were.

Just shows the MOT guys don't spot everything.

From what I have been told the reason for this is because they do not take off the wheels to look at the discs, pads etc as they are not allowed to remove anything, so they tend to use their experience or guess re the brake condition

I had a total brake fail on a renault 9 I had years ago and coming down the M1 when you had to stop at the broadway roundabout I pressed the brakes and it went straight to the floor - nothing no brakes, it was a real brown trouser moment
