Facebook?

Hi folks,

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here and really genuinely not wanting to take anything away from this EXCELLENT resource but is there a MHCraic Facebook page? Or do folks here do Facebook. I used to despise it and all it stood for but I regret to admit that I'm a bit of an addict now with being so far away from home. It really is a great way to keep up with things and events in real live time but more importantly (and this stems from viewing Shivsters Dropbox file from NYE earlier this evening) it's a great way to put names to faces.

In relation to our Porsche Club Ireland Forum, everything happens there. The FB page (I set up both) really doesn't take away from it but it allows folks to communicate on a more familiar level & basically see each other's mush in greater photo detail.

Anyway, I'm john Phelan with a black and white profile pic on stage hunched over a guitar if anyone cares to add me. I think I'm johnphelan/71 in Facebook speak too. (That may not be right though.

Ali or mods if this is deemed to be not in the spirit of this forum for any reason, please just delete - no explanation required, I totally understand.

P.S. If you look to the bottom right of the Forum, you will see a Facebook link, that allows you share a topic (if it isn't in the subscribed section) on Facebook.

Still hate it though and look forward to it's demise which will happen eventually.

I've often read that signature but assumed it related to this.

Ok - bad post so... Lolol

Btw - experts say it's already dead in the water with the younger crew and main target market since granny, grandad and aunt Mary are now on it and asking to be friends. I repeat though.... It's brilliant when you're away from home!

Having lived outside of island and then coming back I understand and use Facebook to keep in touch with the old crew from London. John where are you originally from in island with a name like Phelan?

I'm from East Meath but the original homestead would be Ballacolla near Abbyleix. My moms side were all Giinness employees from Mt. brown for generations!

I actually like Facebook. :bandit:

I originally joined it to keep an eye on my kids and what they're up to. A "parental supervision" kind of thing. But soon after doing so, I discovered a lot of my former workmates, school mates and most of my family and relations were already on there and actively communicating! So I'm one who enjoys logging into facebook regularly and seeing what my friends and family are up to. I've re-kindled a lot of old friendships through FB which is nice, especially with those that have scattered to the 4 corners of the globe, its nice to see how everyone is getting on.
Also, FB is now the "notice board" for my local motor-biking community with regular weekend spins & get-togethers. So it works well for me.
From my own point of view, I infrequently put up photos and share topics that my family or I might have an interest in, but I'm not one who updates my FB status with what I had for breakfast or when my last bowel movement was like some folks on facebook...

I prefer MHcraic for it's social interaction, its much more real than the likes of FB, but having two media running parallel works for me.

Yes, I understand its attractions and benefits. I do have an FB account but I don't currently use it. I would like to be able to use it more to share with family and close friends but I don't trust it. Not one bit. As a platform it is far to open for my liking. But for some that is its greatest attraction.

A few of you are talking about sharing photos etc. Just in case you don't know this, be careful about geotagging information associated with your pictures. Pictures taken with a smartphone, iPad and some cameras automatically adds geotags i.e. exact data with respect to where this photo was taken. Like all tech it great when used properly. 40 years from now when your grandchildren are wondering where was that photo taken they will be able to find out. But, when the photo is posted online today it's also pretty simple to grab that information now and map it to google maps. Giving a very, very precise location of where the photo was taken.

Some services automatically delete this data, I understand FB do. But then again, best advice is to turnoff geotagging for photos on your phone. Remember you could message a photo to friend who then puts it up on a public forum where they think they are posting anonymously. E.G HappyChap posts oh look at my cute niece. Or your mate puts up a photo of your pride and joy that you think is safely tucked away out of sight.

Burglars, stalkers, weirdos and far worse are out there. Alarmist? Maybe but I'm not trying to be. If you want the alarmist view look an the American news reports on this. Probability that it could impact you? Nobody really knows but quite small. True? Yes absolutely.

I use it to share things with friends and family, the bit I hate is the like this or be condemned to hell for eternity or win this piece of crap, which is what a lot of people post. The biggest thing they could do is put a dislike button on so it will hide crap.

I had the most horrid FIL anyone could possibly ask for enough said don't start me.
He is no longer there but made my life hell whenever he could - not a nice person.
We don't like to use the word hate in this house so I won't.
