A large CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) is due to arrive this afternoon and it is a 50% prediction that the Aurorae will be visible at mid latitudes across the UK possibly lasting until the early hours of the morning. Weather forecast is for mostly clear skies across the UK.

see: www.spaceweather.com and http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ for latest updates!

I saw that on the star watching program which was on last night, I think we need to have no light pollution to see it

Do you think all this has anything got to do with the Wise Men going from the East to Bethlehem? I'm being serious.

I dont think so, I was at a presentation in the Armagh planetarium a number of years ago and they put the idea forward that the wise men followed a comet. During those distant times any sort of celestial event was treated as being a sign from the various gods

Just took a dander up to scrabo tower but cloud has closed in and I think that took away any chance of seeing anything tonight..
Too cold to stay any longer, will maybe take a look tomorrow if the weather looks good..

Well it was supposed to be one of the best and strongest in a few years. I turned out to be one of the weakest and poorest and although it triggered a display in Norway it was 'nothing significant' and the Aurorae disappeared after just a few hours.

Of course the cloud came in quickly before midnight rendering the whole thing moot anyway. Clear skies are predicted tonight, but it's not looking promising, but there again who really knows. It all depends on the volume and charge of the remainder of the CME still out there on the way in.
