Good Morning,
Has anyone used an Industrial / Mechanic / Garage for spraying the underneath of our Motorhomes or are you all DIY?
If DIY - did you buy the add on spray attachments and use a compressor or hand paint on?
What Ramps did you use for it - or did a MOT spray clean centre allow you to use their drive on?

If Professional - Who did it and ball park of costs?

Winter may be still coming and my Hibernated Hymer has never had road salt attack before I got her?

Thanks

Ally is the man to keep you right with waxol.

He is well used to using it and if you ask nicely he may sort you out.

Fergal,

I regularly done classic cars in the past and have done a couple of Motorhomes I have the equipment here. To me there is nothing like a compressor and a proper gun for applying it. Brushing it on just doesn't get to those awkward bits that need covered. I could do it here for you, starting at £65 if you buy the waxoyl. Price will go up depending on if you want panels drilled and sprayed inside etc but I could discuss that with you.

Creates a lovely smell in the Motorhome for about a week ;)

Cheers Gents  - it is good to know that Ally does this service as the hand application of 6 litres with a brush under this unit absolutely covered every square inch of both hidden and protected skin :D
One boiler suit hit the wheeliebin. The smell of petrol off me for removing the black underseal afterwards - >_< Glad none of my house smokes or :'(

I didn't get into the bits above the gearbox area and this is where the spray would work its bit best.
Can you apply the waxoil over the bitumen stuff (Underseal)?

In my opinion and I am sure others may disagree, bitumen type stuff/black underseal/schutz whichever you wish to call it should be left on the shop shelf.
I have seen so many classic cars where it has tore unknown to the car owner, the water and dirt has got into the tear and doing damage for a long time before anyone realises. It's then to late and a big hole appears :( - also as you have experienced it's a nightmare to remove!

I would not spray waxoyl over underseal as that would be a waste of time. Where it might help is if you periodically check the underseal and if you found a tear to inject some waxoyl into it.

Do you apply it to the wooden underside of the main habitation areas as well as the metal on the cab/chassis

Hmm it might act as a water barrier but I can't see it doing any more good other than that. Personally I wouldn't bother.

I would have thought it would be a waste of money putting it on the wood underneath the van.

Thanks Ally and all for the input and advice.
I did cover the whole works underneath - wood and metal with exception to the Axles / gas and brake pipes which I would think the waxoil would be more suited - Cast Iron and soak-ability/absorb /stretch-ability with heat and cold conditions.
Alright you think to do this with axles?

Depends on where it was applied. Inside box section where it does not get affected by spray or the weather then just need to check it every couple of years. For spots that are prone to attack like wheel arches etc then repeat every year.

No matter who do it, make sure it is on a fine warm day as metal soaks a lot of water in damp weather and there is no point in trapping water inside the wax oil. I see no reason why you cannot do it yourself if you feel competent, However a pit or lift would be beneficial.
