Bio Diesel

 ·
Posted: 07.01.2014  ·  #1
Hi All,
I am seeking any Biodiesel Suppliers or experienced home brewers as I want to change my 2.5TD to vegetable oil.

It would be ideal if any other MH owner has changed their Fiat engine over and could give some assistance in the following:

If an oil preheater is required prior to filter/pump?
Did you install a separate tank with a flip over switch or use a mix with diesel?
If you "home brew" - what is the setup/costs and results?
How often do you change the fuel filter?

Many thanks

I used solely BIO in a 1990 Ducato 2.5td. Was told at the time if it was a Bosch fuel pump the pump would fail and it did. Found no other problems and saved a fortune even after reconditioning the pump. I made no other mods.

A lot of the modern engines dont like the full bio stuff and some even struggle with some of the pump sold diesel due to the levels of bio/ethanol added. With variances in quality it can be an expensive trial should something fail.

I looked into using vegetable in a previous van, a Mercedes 410. AFAIK you can get a heater that will strap around the fuel filter and you will also need to get a heat exchange unit to heat the veg oil from the cooling system to thin out the veg oil to run through the fuel pump & injectors, you have to run diesel through the engine before you turn it off and start it with diesel. the heater in the filter unit heats the veg oil until the engine heats up and the heat exchange unit takes over. as Ally said the system suits a in line pump which has its own lubrication better than the Bosch or cav rotary pumps which depends on the fuel to lubricate them. This system suits the older type engines better, as the fat controller said i would not use it in a modern common rail engine. the above system is for thick veg oil, there is a different system for diluted veg oil

A friend of mine who is into all this stuff claims that the best diesel for any vehicle is PB Ultimate Diesel. I've been using it in my LR Discovery and Citroen C6 and there's no comparison to the supermarket rubbish.

I agree Jack

I used to fill the works van with bio when it was on the pump in local garage (no longer available)
It smelt like driving a mobile chip shop all the time and performance was poor

Digger even though Ultimate is more expensive it is worth it. It's so much more pleasurable to drive both vehicles and amazingly I am paying no more than I did and I'm doing the same miles.

Yeah I got them the wrong way round. It's the fault of this site and Ally won't do anything about it. Lol Shivster it should have read BP so if you go to any BP filling station you should be able to get Ultimate Diesel or Petrol.

There's no BP filling stations in the south,

Topaz or esso claim to have super doper stuff added to the diesel to clean the engine but I'm not convinced they have (not in theese parts anyway)

May be so up north,

Yeah not convinced either however I have gotten dirty diesel in the past and you would know it in no time.
I even had the misfortune of allowing someone to fill me up once who put petrol in my diesel car!
Luckily I coped it before I started the engine.

Petrol in the diesel isn't too bad as long as you can dilute it with diesel, the other way is the one to phone the breakdown service for.

The supermarkets have a higher ethanol content than most garages, and some shady garages sell laundered diesel. Stick to main brands BP, Esso, Topaz! Maxol etc

Thanks Pat - it appears that I missed it yesterday for 400 Euros - but good information and heads up as it indicates Green Fuels here in the north who make the processors.
I will have a look around
thanks again

Hope we make it on our run to Benone tonight :'( Additional Fuel filter in line and a replacement in the unit just in-case it cloggs up with the silt of the tank being flushed out :'(

Mix rate of 3 Diesel to 1 Veg oil - sure its good craic :-)

Interesting. With this 3:1 ratio, is there any need to put trace heating on the fuel lines to make sure the veg oil doesn't impede the flow of fuel?

I spoke to a lad that ran 2:1 in his MK2 landie and he had to add trace heating wire to his fuel lines as it was tending to clog the fuel lines, especially in colder weather when the viscosity of the fuel thickened.

Don't know Blag - first trial tonight :'(
I thinking / hoping / praying that with this ratio its warm enough to not need preheating.

Its just a trial as I took the head staggers yesterday

If i was serious with it going 100% Vege - there is a kit on the WWW for £90 or so from Germany that has the pre heater, solenoid valve etc - just need another tank under her.
This might be the route depending on tonight and the potential increase on diesel taxes threatened by the government :(

I need all of the Craicers positive meditation thoughts to get us up and down without the engine going SPLATTY - SPLA - SPLAT :o

you will have everyone going hungry as you will smell like a chippy van

We used to tun the Musso on a bio mix which was something like 25L heating oil to 3 of veg oil and it didnt need preheating

Heating oil? tut tut....

8:1 probably wouldn't make any difference, but the lower ratios has me interested, 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1 or even 100% veg are where the significant cost savings are (and more technical solutions required).

A neighbour of mine tried the veg oil on his old VW golf but he could never get it to work right. The car spent more time being towed home that it did driving under it's own power!

I ran a 96 Astra diesel van (putting up loads of Milage per week)1.7 opel engine on 60 oil 40 diesel in summer and opposite in winter, never a bother in 14 months and it made €500 more when I was selling it as new owner was a tree hugger,

The only difference I noticed was it took a bit longer to start in the morning and it had a lovely aroma follow it

Hi All, there were no issues with running her on the mix - and it did give a great aroma :D

Puts further thought into the additional fuel tank, preheating vegi oil system :-|
