Hi fellow Motorhomers...
I was advised to take a look at this group from wildcamping.co.uk as I posted our intentions and some fellow MH's advice for our trip to Ireland in June 2014 (hey planning is good in the winter :D )
We have a Compass merit 410, we have had some great adventures doing two trips to europe for the last three years as far south as monaco or Santander in Spain, but I wanted to come across and show Joanne (my wife and map reader  ) and Uska her guide dog the beautiful striking countryside and a bit of the craic I have experienced when I come over to work. I Love the black stuff and the real pub food, and so does Uska (he's a black lab what else would he drink when he's off harness)

I found the ferry from holyhead to dublin waaaay too expensive for the 6mtr van on the "off chance" I tried the Liverpool-Belfast route and was really pleased with £240 ish return on a saturday 10.30 am sailing, its a 6 hour ferry and cost less than the 4 hour ...hows that? but anyway I'm pleased as it makes Ireland "doable." (we only live 10 mile from the terminal in Birkenhead)
  looking forward to tips and fav places to visit combination of WCamping and Pub stops.
I use the POI from WC on my Tom tom its worth the membership after two free nights.

Hi David, Welcome to Motorhomecraic. We have our own POI's here also which cover the whole of Ireland, subscription set at €10 a year.

Boats on the Irish sea must be the most expensive in the world! hopefully one day it will change.

Welcome to the craic David, Joanne and Uska.(had a Google at Uska and it's either USA karate / kick boxing or the tale of a Turkish woman by Eartha Kitt ) . I'm sure if you stay tuned til June the craicers will suggest an eventful trip.

Hi
David seems so fomal, should I change my profile to dave? its a bit more meeeee :D

Guide dogs actually name the dogs of each Litter of pups by the same letter of the alphabet, his litter was all "U" difficult to get 10 names begging with U!! He loves the van, he is happiest when he's sitting in-between the front seats and we are moving along..

Ally €10 seems a good price, can I pay by paypal?
No problem paying, help the site out too... :-)

Dave, it's wonderful that you describe Joanne as your map reader. Being the most un pc here I will ask about your description as map readers reliant on a guide dog. I'm sure that technologies have moved on from braille maps, made worse from our bloody potholes and bouncing over the pins. How is modern sight impairment improved with technology.

Joanne tells me she couldn't read a map when she was fully sighted so no chance now!
She has about 10% left in one eye and holding on to that real carefull! we have to laugh about it and that's the way she deals with it most of the time...

We use a TOM TOM XL. GPS with the uk poi downloaded, and in France we use the POi from icamping.fr
That gives us aires and poi in uk...

Last year on one trip we lost 5th gear ( usuall Peugeot issue '98. 2500 turbo diesel) anyway we ended up driving from Bordeaux down to Santander just following the coast and taking it easy, then I fixed it when I got home and ordered the 5th gear, but we still had great fun, technology is shite for visually impaired, she uses a noro shell phone with big buttons, voice over on new phones mac and android are heavily dependent on being able to see where your touching the screen, we listen to audio books everywhere we go (kindle has a great voice over facility) but no tv in the van...

So the outcome is we like to meet and chat with people, hence why I want to take her over to Ireland, I come over about 4 times a year to work as far west as Galway, North to Port Stewart South to clonikilty... I always have had great xperiences but I'm just a simple service engineer who works in the food industry.
Tried to get the trip organised around the bike racing but she saw through that one... 🇧🇭

Yep I ride bikes too... :bandit:

Lovely explanation of what we all take for granted Dave. Many a spouse couple argue over directions. Despite my known humour, I work in special needs and I along with others think that this is essential information for those that are thinking of entering the motorhoming community. Today I have a bad cut on my right hand index finger and can't believe that this causes problems of mobility. Unreal.

haha yep just make sure it doesn't get infected....

Do the same rules apply to Eire, re access with guide dogs.... I've had some really good errm "discussions" over the years in France, I now have a copy in french and english of the DDA equivalent in France "Mitteron law" I think, even last year I had to explain in a supermarket, the manager was very aggressive saying non access... in French said couldn't speak english so I says ok back in a minute... then came back with the laminates copy and explained the on the spot fine by the Gendarme, then all of a sudden good english! Then apologised... all I want to do is educate people and be allowed "equal access for all" despite any disability. we walked out without spending a cent!

Joanne helps out Guide Dogs, she gets in touch with Guide Dog puppy walkers and then writes little stories for Guide Dogs to Tweet...it all raises awareness of VIP and hopefully funds.
She also helps out locally with tin rattling and fund raising, Uska is a very handsome dog and knows when he sits at the tin rattling they increase the fund raising considerably.

What area of special needs do you work?

What area of special needs do you work?

My area includes moderate to severe learning difficulties, along with respite care. Quite a few in our community are from a similar background. Many folks in the motorhoming community are either parents or careers of special needs off spring, who have struggled in the past with holiday accommodation. All our lovely little angels.
