Does anyone know where i could get the use of an Imperial die set I need to deepen the threads on a heat exchanger which I think is American made (in a French van ???? ) I think the size im looking for is 1 in. I bought a new exchanger (internet ) but 1 of the ports has a thread thats not deep enough and i think it would be quicker and easier to deepen the thread than return it and have part replaced ,Im in the Kildare area

There is a fella I know in Newbridge, Mark 'Mo' Malone, who specialises in American muscle cars and choppers, so probably will have the required tap and die set. I have his number out in the garage and can get it for you tomorrow if required.

Dave, If you take it with you to a local tractor garage they might have taps or a thread gauge to see what threads you have. A lot of the old Tractors were imperial. Is it a fine or coarse thread?

Sorry Dave, I had a chat with him on Facebook and he hasn't got a set but will check around with his mates and will let me know tomorrow night if he can get them.

Its a coarse thread that needs to be deepened ,I will check out tractor restorers
All local engineering only have metric ,I may go to rad repairer and see can he take old one out and put it in the new one

Hydraulic hose and brake vendors often have imperial and metric dies

Its probably 1'' UNC so, is it to fit a pipe fitting ? if so it was designed to accommodate some type of plumbing fitting so could you get a correct fitting for it?

Hi,
Don't know if this info is of any good but most old imperial pipe/plumbing fittings are B.S.P. and a 1/2" BSP is in fact about 1" in diameter. I have a 1/2 BSP tap but don't have any dies also have thread gauges so if you check how many TPI (threads per inch) and measure the dia. you should be able to determine what threads you have.
If you need the thread gauges I live in Bangor and will post to you or arrange something via craic meets. I don't use my van in the winter months but someone local could possibly help.

Do you have any pics of the exchanger?

Have you considered making up an adapter instead of using the die? Or maybe taking it to a rad specialist who can braze on a different fitting?

There's a place in Cork I use from time to time to make up adapters to convert pipe fittings from imperial to metric etc.
RCC in Monkstown, Co Cork. +353 (021) 4841562.

Ask for Richard or Ger.

She's had cancer for about 2 years, but in the last 2 weeks it got in to her brain, she went blind on Wednesday, walking into things, yesterday she started to take bad seizures, so we had to do it.  she was about 11 years
