Traffic lights

I commute to work every day.

Every day, I get to see gobshites blasting through red lights on a regular basis. Almost as if the amber and red traffic lights were more of a recommendation than a rule.

This morning the record was broken when 8 cars ran through a red light at the Dunkettle interchange just outside Cork city. Its ridiculous, and someone is going to get killed.

Everyone is in a hurry, myself included, but at what cost?

I'm wondering is this unique to Cork, or is it happening across the country, especially above in the north?

Don't really see anything like that, but then I think a lot of our traffic lights have camera's on them.
I remember my Father was building a Mormon church in Dublin back in the 70's I think, we used to go down and stay in a caravan now and again. I remember clearly that traffic lights were just a thing you ignored and they were only there as ornamnets :)

Nope. It's something that has crept in over the last several years. I see it almost daily. One or two will just keep going. I saw one recently accelerate and power on through even though the light had changed when they were about 15 feet away. Best to just move slowly off when the lights change and keep an eye out for these idiots.

Just for a day, so I could book every single driver on the M2 that insists on sitting in the middle lane! we drive on the left in this country. Leaving Belfast, yes that lane does eventually go to Glengormley but not for a few miles. Going into Belfast - yes that lane does go of at the docks but again not for a few miles. 🇧🇭 🇧🇭

Most mornings I'm on the motorbike and extra care is needed. Yes, when the lights go green for me, I instinctively wait a second or so and look for idiots who might be inclined to blast on through the red. The odd time someone behind me blasts on the horn thinking I didn't see the green!! Theres no pleasing some people.

Too much aggression out there..

I heard recently that we are likely to get cameras installed at major intersections down here to deal with red light runners. More revenue for the government I guess. As long as no one gets blown away beforehand, especially me on me bike!

Was just sitting at a red light on Bangor ring road when van went through in outside lane. I caught up with him at next roundabout. What's the point?

As well as traffic lights does any one in these islands know the proper way to negotiate blooming roundabouts! I drive a lorry for a living and the amount of idiots (who by the way think they are always right) cut u up then gesticulate at u every day. I have no idea where they get their licences from? Well that's my little rant over and I'm feeling better for it already. Sorry if ihave offended anybody .oh and by the way......seasons greetings to everyone I enjoy reading your posts

Agreed! roundabouts are a nightmare especially those wee ones they have put everywhere. No one seems to know how to use them.

Hate to admit it but spent a lot of years in England and they are much better drivers than here. Overtaking and roundabout negotiations go a lot smoother.

I agree Taylor I hate folk on roundabouts who don't use their indicators. Sometimes I've almost or maybe sinned! Just glad they didn't hear me.

I have to agree with you about the roundabouts! I don't know about the North but in 1977 when I did my Driving Test in Tipperary there was no Roundabouts so we were never shown the correct way around them. I only learned years later when doing a test for a lorry. In 1978 I think they gave out a large number of amnesty licences because there was too much of a backlog to Test, so there is a large number of people out there that don't know how to use roundabouts

Sorry to disagree chaps and lasses but the driving standards in the UK leave a lot to be desired.
It is only where there are camera clearly mounted on top of the lights does there seem to be a following of the rule that once the light turn red the first car should stop and not the third or fourth.
Just to make a few new friends the worst culprits are those on two wheels either pedal of engine powered
As for Mini roundabouts why the H**l do they exist we have one at the end of our road on a main road with a good bus service. My observation is that less than one in 10 go round the island the rest over it and if you get 2 or three arrive at the same time every body stops because no body seem that they know who have right of way.
"my" mini roundabout has been up about a year now and the accident rate has increased massively I know this as when some either hits or is hit by a double decker it makes the local paper and to date I can remember over 10 reports (so about 1 per month) not bad when I cannot recall any last year before the dam thing was painted on the road and those on the main road had priorty
Re those things that flash
I thought that all roundabouts had some blocking devices that meant that indicators didn't work on them.
OOh I feel so much better after that rant
David

There are always the idiots who don't know how to drive or use indicators, it obvious that all us craicers know how to do it all properly and we should start teaching everyone else. I will start with the wife, I think I will be a while

The best drivers on the road are not only aware of what they are dong but anticipate what others may or may not do! Anyone who had done an advanced driving course will tell you that reading the road is more about the knowing what is going on around them - procrastinate all you like boys. Your safety lies in your hands ... nothing will change it is reality. I CLOCKED 520 kms in the past two days ...lorry drivers are the most courteous guys on the road, they know how to navigate roundabouts and (my bug bear) how to drive on motorways. All drivers should take the full UK bike test and learn the value of anticipation! As someone who had a full (UK) bike license and every tick on their license bar the HGV, plus a monitor of a fleet of twelve company car drivers I am the most nervous passenger alive!!!!
TAKE CARE OUT THERE.

If you want to see people crackup at a roundabout head on over to this one in Hemel Hempstead in England. As you approach it you think that everyone is going around it the wrong way, it's only when you get up close you realise that it is a series of mini roundabouts. Some people just can't handle it at all. When I was living over there for a few years a mate of mine would drive around the town when he came to visit rather than do battle with "the magic roundabout".

Used that roundabout every morning for a few months, it's quite daunting when you first see it but works very well!
