Importation of an RV from UK!

 ·

Hi folks, I'd be very familiar with the importation process of cars into Ireland (rep.) but have never imported a camper or RV. Does one need to physically bring it to them for any sort of assessment or is it just a paperwork transaction and payment at the relevant office. Machine will be registered to MIL's house in Bishopstown, Cork.

Exactly what do I need?

Thank you in advance! :-)

Being in the north I don't know the full ins and outs of the process, but you will have to get it tested at some point and your speedo will have to read km/hr. Not sure what your rv has on it but both the US and UK use mph

I am not sure about the speedo, John! I have imported a number of cars and 4x4's from the UK and never had to change the speedo over to km/h. Actually many new motorhomes sold in the south are in mph. A friend imported a Lorry recently and he had to take it to an NCT center to be inspected, pay import duty and get the new reg no. He now have to take it to be weighed at an official weigh bridge, then to a DOE center to be tested, plated & stamped. That's the process he told me that is involved in importing a Lorry, I would imagine an RV would be similar.

Vehicles designed for the uk market have both mph and kph shown on them, all lorries are the same except they record the number of km. the rv originated in the USA which only has mph and this would satisfy the uk inspectors but will not pass in the ROI unless it shows kph

I think if you go to revenue.ie you will find all the information you need, I inported a few from Germany a few years ago, it was the revenue I had to bring iit to, but it's all changed now, I only payed 50e import duty but I think it's 17.5 per cen now, but check with revenue they are the only ones that can give you the proper information.

Check with revenue, they're the only one's that know the procedure , all the rest is hearsay, or keep it on foreign plates.

If it has been registered as a Motorhome there should be no problem. I imported a Citroen Mehari last year into Northern Ireland and it was straight forward.

Well now, for the amount of use (miles on road) it might get, that might be an option as long as insurance can be sorted!

It's 13.3% of open market value according to Revenue.ie. :(

I didn't have to pay anything on it apart from the £50 quid to register it. It was so straight forward I couldn't believe it.

The biggest problem with your rig is 13.3% of what????? what is the open market selling price of it??? It is not you payed for it!!! You will have landed it in Ireland and then they will come up with the market value when you bring it to be inspected. God only knows what they will come up with.

I agree Pat, and they won't give you a open market selling price until they see it, they then can put any price they want, and you have no say in the matter. 🇧🇭

Can you not tell them to cancel your request and that you are going to sell it in the uk instead as the vrt requested is way toooooo expensive :bandit: :bandit:
