Newbie Introduction!

 ·
Posted: 14.11.2013  ·  #1
Hello there folks, I am a newbie on your site and indeed to RV-ing myself, although my parents have owned and live the winter months in California in a big one which I have holidayed in with my young family many times, so, we already know we love it! :D

So, I've just bought and await delivery of a 1993 Gulfstream Friendship which I'm told is 11meters long or 37ft including the motorcycle lift. I live in Almaty, Kazakhstan and intend to holiday in Ireland in it all summer as soon as my two boys break from school.

Although I've paid the vendor the money the add is still up on piston heads for anyone who may have seen it. It's advertised as a 1991 but my assessor was able to tell both the vendor and I that it was only manufactured in 1993 in the US, which was a nice surprise. I haven't seen it yet although the pics look very very good and the assessor gave it an amazingly good bill of health. Like myself the vendor is into classic cars and campaigns a historic rally car which he towed about behind the RV when out competing.

The vendor owns a number of companies in Wales that are involved in the Motorhome business, I think he fits out VW busses as campers for VW uk, so he gutted the whole machine and totally refitted everything early this year to prep it for sale including all new appliances. Nobody has spent a single night in it since - everything is brand new and although very clean, it is kind of square and older looking outside but you could be forgiven for thinking you were inside qa 2013 model.

I am sure I will have plenty of questions and it would be nice to hook up with some of the American RV community at home and take from all of your experiences and advice!

Thank you in advance folks.

Regards

John.

Hi Ally, thank you so much!

I have literally hundreds of pics on my Dropbox account that the extremely thorough assessor took and spammed  me with but probably just best to link the piston heads add for you to look at. I hope this works although I think this forum template is very similar to one I moderated before on classic cars so I think it'll work.

Thanks a lot Kevin! I'm delighted to be on the RV ladder and really like the combo of what I seem to have bought.

I went to book the rental of a European style motor home to tour Ireland and the uk in for 3 months this coming summer and was just shocked at the costs involved and indeed the restrictions. Funnily I'd been admiring this one on pistonheads a few months and when I realised how expensive renting (dead money) was going to be.... I just decided I'd be pushing up daisies long enough and bought it to give my boys memories that they'll never forget!

I'm delighted tbh.

Thank you so much for the warm welcome folks. Home to Ireland for Crimbo on Dec. 19th and I'm probably mad but I'm going to do a few nights out and about in it if the roads aren't too treacherous... If they are it'll stay put in my mates yard and we'll kip on it off the grid anyway for the craic! 8kva Built in Gene should be grand I hope!

Can't wait. Us 3 boys are real petrol heads and would rather sleep in this than a house any day! Lolol

Welcome John and what a nice looking RV

You'll never want to be out of it i'm sure :D

Just a couple of things, A class RV's are big and as such have a lot of exposed plumbing so just be careful if it gets very cold this winter. The water heater is particularly vulnerable to frost damage. We winterise ours when in storage.

Secondly, driving a large RV takes a bit of getting used to but isn't very difficult. Your main concern is the back of the vehicle. The overhang at the back can easily wipe out traffic as you make a turn so get used to constantly checking your rear view mirrors when turning and don't be afraid to take up both lanes when approaching a roundabout.

Thanks very much folks, you're all very warm and welcoming.

I certainly hope to hook up with a few from here if possible over the summer of 2014! I love the park where we usually camp on Achill, not so much the park per say (although it is good) but being able to throw on a wetsuit and play in the Atlantic all day even if it's lashing, so I intend to spend a bit of time up around that parish anyway!

Great advice Bing, thank you! Being a country boy and having been drawing hay and silage from about age 8 I totally agree with you. I've a full C class licence anyway and although not often these days have driven some fairly big stuff over my driving career. Funny thing though, when driving my parents RV in California I often thought to myself that I'd never driven anything as comfortable in my life!!! That said, that particular state just seems designed around RV's.... Huge lanes etc.

Re-storage, I'm lucky that I can keep it indoors in a huge modern shed unit. I'm not sure I'd have bought if I didn't have this facility tbh. Great advice re winterising. Brand new water heater in it so I'd not like it to crack in the icy stuff. Again, I suppose I'm lucky living in the mountainous city of Almaty you get fairly used to winterising everything including yourself..... Temps can get to -40* C here in the depths of winter. :o

Thanks again folks!

Ha -thanks! But it's 40*C + for 8 months of the year then within one week, winter comes and brings the snow. It's a really great climate here - summer most of the year then skiing for winter 10 mins away. Even at its coldest, there's very little moisture or wind chill so you can go out with only a coat on.

Different kind of cold than at home, way colder but dryer and less miserable so doesn't feel as cold often. There's also better clothes, tyres, winter plans, vehicle prep etc etc. in place - just used to dealing with it, it's really no drama.

I'd say that makes no sense for someone who's never been here..... Ha ha! :fgrin:

Welcome to the mad (in NI/Ireland) world of RV ownership, you don"t have to be crazy, but it sometimes helps ! :D I"m sure you know that anyway ...! Maybe get together sometime in 2014 and trade RV stories  By the way,I like the sound of nice, long hot summers then cold, but dry, short winters, just wrap up warm and, like me, drive a Landcruiser :D
