Winter Storage

Hi All,

As a new motorhome owner (only got Millie in August) we have loved being out with her, and spent as many weekend out as possible, even had a night in the driveway! However it is time for us to put her in for the winter due to full time working commitments as well as college weekends, sob sob! Also takes up so much room in my narrow driveway.

So heres my question, clean her, take out linen and drain all the tanks, including the heating system - got that much.
She is being wintered indoors but no access to electricity in the shed, any advice?

I have a master switch but that means no alarm.. ????

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Shiv.

I would take the leisure battery/s out and put them on an intelligent/smart charger over the winter, the engine battery would be best getting the same treatment unless you plan to visit every now and again and give it a short run. Of course that would leave you with no alarm, so best to think how secure it is where it is parked.

Some moisture traps and all cushions removed, all cupboard doors left open to help the air circulate.

I agree with Ally , make sure you put leisure batterys on wood floor and charged , you would probably be better to give the van an occasional run as taking van battery out would probably mess with imobiliser etc... it would also rotate tyres so they dont go flat ( not punctured ) on the bottom, and run oil through engine to keep it lubed

It is advisable to take your Motorhome for a run at least once a week over the storage period as we had a Motorhome in at the beginning of May this year that had been stored and never moved from around November of the previous year. It had seized brake wheel cylinders and a badly seized brake caliper that had to be replaced with a new one. Also the seal dried up on the bottom front pulley and started to leak oil that would not have occurred had the vehicle been at least started a few times. So my advice is if your going to leave it up in storage at least start it and take it for a run once a week.

Oh god - thanks for all the advice. Sounds to me like we should keep taking her out even for just day trips.
Rain, hail or snow like the rest of you die hards, really appreciate all the comments, there are not enough days in the week!

From my experience over the years take time out to enjoy what you've got. I've discovered that the work will always be there when i go back to it.

I'll kinda agree with you jack but it depends what the work is,

In my line of work if the work is left too long some other lad takes it and that means less euros for enjoying the freedom of the open road and all that,

I think its a balancing act and takes a bit of planning,

If I had my way we'd be away all the time (just waiting on the lotto numbers to come up)

The trouble is there will be twice as much when I get back, Jack.

You are freaking me out about the mice now!
My motorhome is gone from the driveway and every time I look outside I feel sad. :(
My mum is in hospital, I am trying to work full time, trying to get an assignment in for college, busy in between being a Taxi driver to a nine year old with a better social life than I will ever have - so maybe I will sneak up to storage and hide away in her for an hour or two at the weekend.
I will also keep doing the lotto.

Shiv, up until this year I kept mine on the driveway and when I felt like it went out put the heat on and sat in her. Great therapy! This year things are a little different as I need to sleep in her a few nights a month with work etc but I am trying to work something out. No place one can clear their head as good as in a motorhome.

Agree Jack I only have Millie (she has a name) a couple of months and I think we have all been found stowed away in her at some time or another, my little girl thinks it is her personal play room, my dog jumps in ready for off if you so much as open the door!

Thanks,

Shiv

Shiv get the Motorhome out of storage onto the driveway at your house and use her over the winter. That's what they are for.

Should you decide to store it on your driveway, make sure it is on a slope to ensure that no water lodges on the roof!
