Why is it impossible to get a TV signal on an aerial south of the border?

Richhill, I was in Howth last week end and got a perfect picture all week end. I'm not a tech wizard and just set it up the way I always do and got perfect pictures. Probably not much help to you.

Thanks Rev. Heading to Howth shortly ourselves.
our aerial is a Status (non digital version) and we have a new Avtex TV. when tuning it asks for "country" and Ireland is not on the list and Auto tuning detects no channels.
Regards

Two different formats.

When the UK went digital, in their wisdom they used an old format "mpeg2" the South uses "mpeg4", so you cannot pick it up with an Avtex TV as it does not have an MPEG4 decoder.

You will need to buy a Saorview box and connect it to your TV.

Saorview is the South's Freeview.

As Ally said Mpeg 2 and Mpeg 4 you must have Mpeg4 (saorview ) in the south

You dont have to have a digital aerial to get digital tv. If the reception is reasonable you will get rte on a standard aerial fitted to most mhs. Your tv must recieve mpeg4 signals or a set-top box of the same spec.
