Any surfers on here?

(as in "ocean wave" surfers not internet surfers)

My 12 year old daughter wants to get herself a surfboard but I haven't a clue what to get. Of course she wants the coolest looking 5ft pro board, and TBH, when I think "surfer chick", I also tend to lean towards these dainty little sporty surf boards... However, after looking at some of the novice surfers on the waves over the last few weekends, we saw the surf boards they were using were kinda big & clunky ...

Advice?

Beginners usually start of with a mal or mini mal board depending on their size. Go for one that is ding proof or you will be sorry.

Last weekend we booked Abbey's first surfing lesson in Garretstown, West Cork.

Gtownadventures have a mobile surf school at the beach. Basically a van & enclosed trailer to store the gear. They hired out everything we needed for her first lesson so it was great to try it out first to see if she really liked surfing or not. We were amazed at how quickly she was able to get up on the board after only a few fundamental instructions from the instructors. It was bitter cold and rained the whole time we were there, but she loved it and is mad for more! The instructors were great.

Oh yeah, she's hooked!

The instructor gave us a wealth of information about the best gear to get for a beginner so that was a great help. 5mil suit, 6ft "foamie", etc...

I recon "Santa" will be bringing her a little something 'surfboard shaped' this Christmas...

She's already planning our camping/surfing weekends in the motorhome for 2014!!

I better crack-on and get the darned thing finished!!!

Isn't that great and I know you'll encourage her. The time will come when she will not want to go with you.
