I think I read either here on or another forum that instead of using the blue stuff you can use either napisan or bio washing tablets as a breakdown agent. If this is true can someone confirm it for me. If not, feel free to have a good laugh at my expense !

Not sure about the napisan but the bio tablets do work and have a less chemical type of smell

I wasn't sure about this either until last year. In the past we had always found Double Elsan Blue to be pretty effective, although we only use the cassette loo for peeing in. Last winter we spent 3 months wild camping in Tenerife where there was a waste discharge which you could not use chemicals with.
We bought biological washing machine liquid from the supermarket, and used this instead of the blue stuff. It was every bit as effective and smelt better. Recommended it to our neighbouring Spanish wild campers and they agreed. Even in that heat the toilet was OK for a few days. We'll never buy the expensive blue stuff again.

I have used Aldis best bio washing machine tabs for the last year or so and find it better than the blue and it smells better.

Good info Guys I wonder would there be any danger of damaging internal parts in the cassette, if not what way do you actually use the tabs, do you insert 1 or 2 at a time and do you add some water at the same time to agitate the tabs or do you wait until a body has to pee. Forgive my ignorance but they do say u learn something new every day. lol. Thanks in advance Jimbob.

Been using them for a while now on and off with no damage, although I think I heard they may damage the rubber seals. Can't really see how though.

I put two in with a bit of water, then top up with Carlsberg as required :)

We have been using the liquid type dishwasher tablets this past few weeks ,less smell but also less breakdown of the contents in the tank. :bandit:

I think long term they are bad for the rubber seals etc I would be careful using them.

If you need any seals or parts for your toilet cassette I keep a full range of them in stock and they can be posted for very little cost.

I've been using the aldi double concentrated bio liquid this year. I find it easier than the tabs, which needed sloshing around to dissolve.

I'm a bit confused as to why washing tablets/ liquid would damage seals more than the commercial alternatives, which I would presume to be chemically stronger? And should I be worrying about the rubber seals on my washing machine?

We used the blue chemical in France over the summer and into September as the temperatures were still hitting 34C last week and down to about 27C this week at home in lower temperatures the liquid washing liquid works really well so far.

I read somewhere a while back that the washing machine tablets gave off too much suds and that dishwasher liquid tablets could be used so I gave them a try and I think they reduce the odour quite well .

Guys I admire how you are prepared to take he rise of destroying the seals in the toilet. Im afraid I don't have that courage.

I've always wondered how the seals could be affected, as I put the bio liquid directly into the cassette tank. It doesn't touch the seals. I don't have a separate cistern, so the flush water has nothing in it, just clean water. It's the clean water (and a bit of know what, of course!) that touches the seals on the way down into the tank.

The combined waste and bio liquid is then poured out through the usual bit, again not touching the seals.

Am I missing something?

Steve, surely when you are travelling the stuff in the tank is splashing around and will touch the seals.

My thoughts as well, it's maybe more relevant to those with a cistern with chemicals in it. Don't know how the tank is put together, is there a lip under the main seal

Ok, yeah I guess it might slop around a bit in transit (or Ducato, even :D ), but the seal's not going to be soaking in it, and it's a diluted amount.

I know many who have been using bio liquid or tabs for quite some time and haven't heard of anyone needed to replace damaged seals yet. And even if they do, I suspect it'd be after several years, and the seals are pretty cheap, and (apparently, cos I've never had to do it) simple to fit.

So all in all I don't think it's a huge risk.

Plus, personally I reckon the smell of the blue stuff is just as bad as the "natural" contents of the cassette!

Just as a comment, the consensus amongst RV owners is to never put any chemical down the loo as it hinders the natural breakdown process of the "materials" within and is a very strong polutant once it reaches the drainage system and the outside environment. I"m very familiar with cassettes and the "blue liquid" as we enjoyed caravans (can I mention the "C" word :D ) for many years, although, with an RV, I"m soooo glad we can go for a week or more without an empty

I don't really get why it would damage the seals (I'm open to be convinced by evidence though!). How would I know it was the biological liquid in a 15 year old van anyway? Savings on one bottle of biological liquid v one bottle of aquachem would pay for the seal anyway I reckon.

Why would the seals be damaged ? After all, washing machines and dishwashers have seals and they"re used much more than the cassettes are.

Personally I use the blue stuff. On the subject of seals I would imaging they will all perish over time regardless of what we use. Having been using cassettes for over 20 years I don't remember ever having to replace seals but perhaps this has been done as part of an annual habitation service without my knowledge.

It might be a better question to ask if anyone has replaced seals and if so how old we're the original ones. Then ask what chemical was being used.

Hello Lads , Regarding the seals being damaged by chemicals,,,its the damage caused by not using the seals and letting them dry out ,that causes the rubber to perish ,not the chemicals.A little olive oil poured onto the seals ,keeps them ship -shape .Hope this helps, Cool

Cool I was told not to put Olive Oil on the seals but to use the tin of stuff that Thetford have specially prepared for seals. Ive been using it for years and have never had any problem. Sorry to confuse the topic further.

the stuff thetford use is similar to this
link

i got a bottle a few years back and its handy for all sorts especially the front window slider rubbers,
when you hear the winder motor under un usual load a squirt of this onto the rubbers will do the trick nicely, or son of a gun if you are stuck

good stuff, bit pricey from Halfords, here's the one I use from CPC

Also great for the locker catches, both inside & out, where you don't want to put anything more oily <_<
