Have a wedding to go to in Portugal at Easter 2014. I am considering going overland through France and Spain to Alvor near Portamao in Southern Portugal. I have never been foreign before in the van and would like to know if this is feasible and what route with stopovers would be best and any pitfalls and security issues i would need to consider? Any help or advice would much appreciated. O-)

I wouldnt be able to help but that would be a nice (but long) drive.
I know Alvor but haven't been there for quite a few years.

How many weeks are you thinking of?

I would imagine at least four days driving each way.
That would still give you 13 days there. Very nice.

I would say about 4 days each way plus through England/ferry to France depending which route you go. You would basically follow the coast through Spain and you would have the options then of all the coastal camp sites. As for security it's just common sense and nothing additional, others may disagree but I have been travelling through and living in Spain, as I have a house there, for a number of years and never had any problems.

I would imagine a route straight down the west coast of France would be best but after that I would be no help to you.

Cherbourg - Saint lo - Rennes - Nantes - Saintes - Bordeaux - Biarritz , might be suitable.

That was pretty much our route home coming back from north Spain.
We only have our van since March this year & we're just home from nearly 7 weeks in France & Spain - amazing!! & def. recommend you do it.
We have friends who drive to their house in south France 3/4 times a year from NI & that journey takes 2 days.
Keep us posted!

The route which mark put on is the one we use to get to Spain, we go across from his route to Santander, Pamplona, Zaragoza, alcaniz and on to our house near Tortosa, you can adapt from Zaragoza via the a23 to Valencia and on down the coast. An alternative which we have done a few times is via Toulouse, carcassone, Perpignan and down along the coast via Barcelona etc.

I suppose it depends what's important to you when you get to you're destination.
