Hi folks! i have recently paid a deposit on a American Coachman which has a petrol engine, I am considering having a LPG conversion done, but i am wondering is it worth it ? considering the difference in price of LPG on a website i came across , from .79c to €1.39?. An advice or insights would be appreciated
regards
Chris

Hi Chris. Welcome to MHcraic.

You'll find an interesting conversation here -
forum/topic.php?t=2375&page=fst_unread&highlight=lpg

And if you do a search for "LPG" or "autogas" on the forum, you'll find a few good threads on the subject.

I think the biggest headache for LPG conversions is the lack of service stations offering LPG in the south. When I looked into this last year there were less than 40 service stations in the whole republic that sell LPG. That's a real pain in the butt... but if you're good at forward planning then you should be good.

The quotes I was given last year for an LPG conversion to our 6.6L carburated engine ranged between €800-1200 euro. I understand the cost to convert a FI engine is quite a lot more... I'm assuming yours is fuel injected? We haven't pulled the trigger on a conversion for ours yet but we will look into it more seriously next year... Cost of LPG is sitting steady @ €0.94c per litre in our nearest service station Cork which is good. I hope it stays at that rate.

PaulH has a gulfstream Independance RV with a V10 petrol engine. It has an LPG conversion. He has some v good stats on the MPG differences between LPG & petrol... I'm sure he'll drop in as soon as he can to fill you in...

Now....

Hi kevin, Thanks for the info. look forward to hearing from that chap regarding the conversion. I was reading your own blog with regard to the refurbishment. It will be fantastic to see it finished. I would not know where to start such a project. well done !
Regarding my purchase i have only paid a deposit and plan to pay the balance when i return from Holidays in two weeks. I don't want to post any information / photos until i take delivery. Just in case the deal falls through! In reality i don't own it yet! But i promise to give you all the info. You probably saw it advertised on donedeal, as they are rare enough.
regards
Chris

(Fingers crossed it all works out well for you)

I'll have a peep over on DD for that rv :-)

Hi Prisma, well done on your deal for a Coachmen, hope it goes through. Re LPG, as Blag says, one of my probs. has been with availablity, I think we"re not too bad up here in the north but, you guys down south are not well provided for at all. I make sure I never leave home without a full tank, I"ve a suplier locally, and that gives me about a 220 mile range. When I venture south I always get on the net to search for a suplier en route, not only that, call them and check they have it. There are plenty listed that no longer supply LPG, even then I can be caught out ! Another thing to bear in mind is access, sometimes the LPG is put in the farthest corner of the forecourt or, as we"re 4m high, under a low canopy, I"ve had to drive on as I cannot reach the pump a few times 🇧🇭 In England LPG is plentiful and in France it"s everywhere so, when you have it, there"s no excuse for not heading over ! Good luck

I thought if you ran out of LPG you could switch over to petrol again?

Yes indeed Jack, but petrol at silly £ per litre and having paid for the conversion, it"s a last resort.. :'( I have had probs. with ours recently, ie: fine on gas but not liking petrol, (stalling/stopping/not getting above 40mph) I"ve emptied/cleaned out the tank and changed the fuel filters (twice) and changed the air filter. It"s one of those intermitent probs. that are so hard to sort/annoying...Hopefully it"s cured, but if not, I"m going to have to admit defeat and give her to a specialist. It was of particular buggeration when, on the way to Rosslare, my usual fill up (LPG) didn"t have any (despite my phone call the eve. before  ), I had to run on petrol....She "decided" not to... After 2 hours of effing about, I was about to give up, I"d called the insurance co. (Stewarts, brilliant service) for recovery, when, after one last go, she fired up and ran the rest of the way to the Celticlink ferry without missing a beat and then off the ferry and round Cherbourg for LPG. I"ve spoken to the fitter in England who talked me thru. adjusting the gas pressure (she started to run a bit "off" on it too). We then drove 6 hours straight and it was 35deg.+ outside, apparently heat can effect running on LPG. She ran fine ,on LPG the rest of the hols. but, I"ve got to get to the "bottom" of it 🇧🇭 . Ah well... I just put it all down to the "adventures" of a holiday in France and the "joys" of motorhoming  !
BTW, we stayed at La Yole, St Jean de Monts and Vallee des Vignes, Loire both lovely sites with big (we need them), fully serviced pitches :D
