Roaming charges

 ·
Posted: 22.08.2013  ·  #1
Roaming fees for voice calls, texts and internet access will effectively be completely scrapped under the proposals, which are part of a broader effort to create a single European telecoms market.

The group of 27 European Commissioners voted in Brussels on Tuesday to drive the package through in time for the European elections in May next year, to come into force as soon as 1 July 2014.

“They agreed that this time next year we will have got rid of these charges,” a Brussels source said
Officials will draw up and publish detailed proposals in the next six weeks.

They expect the death of roaming charges to typically wipe 2pc off mobile operators’ revenues, after several years of tightening regulations designed to put an end to shockingly high bills for holiday makers and business travellers. They argue that operators will gain in the longer term by customers using their mobiles more abroad, particularly to access the internet.

Good news.
I have just changed to vodafone who offer a £3 per day option to take your inclusive bundles anywhere in Europe.

You are only charged £3 on the days you use it.
I thought this was quite good.

It'd be brilliant if this worked out though. Just to be able to use your contract or payg mobile anywhere in Europe without thinking!

I agree John with you. I know they all tell you wonderful things but my experience has always Ben big bills when I get back from France.

You are right Jack.
We just accept that an increase in the mobile bill is part of the holiday costs but it would be nice if it didn't happen.

I have looked into a few of the French sim options but don't see it being that much cheaper. They also have their own issues for us, one being you need all your contacts to have your french number saved to receive a viber call from you.

A reduction in roaming charges will be very welcome.

The EU Commission sometimes get a bad rap but I have to say I really appreciate their efforts to bring the mobile operators to heel. They have already brought roaming charges and various costs down and the total abolition of roaming charges would be most welcome.

Our own regulator (in ROI) called Comreg is pretty much useless. I took a few complaints to their attention and they didn't seem interested in helping or putting themselves out.

My pet hates with the mobile operators are as follows:

- Roaming charges as mentioned above

- The fact that 1850 numbers or 1890 numbers are not included in the plans (these are free calls or low cost calls if you call from a land line but you have to pay for the call if you call from a mobile even if you have minutes from your plan to use)

- I had an O2 dongle for a broadband account. If I went over the monthly data allowance, the cost per unit (per mb) increased by approx 17 times - that's 1700 percent. I don't mind paying for using more than my allowance but 1700 per cent more per unit I believe is a rip off.

- The operators will not share networks. In ROI there are places where Vodafone have good coverage but O2 have none - and vice versa. It means if you are in a place where your operator has no network you are without a phone despite the fact that a perfectly good network is available. Sharing networks would give a more complete and reliable coverage for all mobile customers. (They could easily implement sharing and cross charge each other for use of each others network)

Mobile operators = rip off merchants :(

Also I bet when the roaming charges are done away with, when you are in another country it will not be part of your bundle.

Good news for THREE Customers

 ·
Posted: 28.08.2013  ·  #12
Remember the old "Three Like Home" well Three have reintroduced it with a different name.

Feel At Home.

Feel At Home is our new service that lets you use your UK allowances to call or text the UK and use data in selected countries abroad. This applies to everyone on our network, whatever type of plan or tariff you have.

You shouldn’t need to do anything to benefit from Feel At Home – it should all work automatically as soon as you arrive.

Where Feel At Home applies.
You can currently enjoy Feel At Home in the following countries:

Australia
Austria
Denmark
Hong Kong
Italy
Republic of Ireland
Sweden.
We are working hard to add more countries to this list and will let you know as soon as we do.

What Feel At Home covers.
Feel At Home means that you can use your UK allowances to:

call the UK
text the UK
use data on your phone.

If you have Three-to-Three minutes, you’ll also be able to use these to call someone else on Three either in the UK or in the same Feel At Home country as you.

If you run out of your allowances.
If you go over your allowances, you’ll be charged at roaming rates that are lower than normal. These rates are:

20p per minute to make calls
7p per text
10p per MB.

I Like this:

Quote
All customers on pay monthly, Pay-As-You-Go, SIM-only, mobile broadband and business plans have the freedom to use Feel At Home within the limits of their current Three price plan. If people exceed the limits of their current price plan then they will still benefit from special roaming rates that are lower than Three’s standard roaming rates. Calls and texts to non-UK numbers will be charged at standard roaming rates and tethering is not allowed.

It is always good to see costs being reduced. I travel a lot for work and am always looking for ways to save cash on the mobile bills.
