We stayed at the campsite over the weekend - not my choice, if that makes any difference! Was trying to work out where the wildcamping spot was, as it wasn't obvious to me - should've checked the threads for the photo's above. There did seem to be some one camper, down on the quays.
As for the site, it was better than I was expecting given some of the reveiws such as those linked too on this thread. The roadways and pitches were gravel, but nothing out of the ordinary in my experience. The only dusty bit was the alternative route in for motorhomes and campervans so you don't have to use the steep windy access road everyone was giving out about. That road looked like it was windened too, and although we weren't on it at night, it did appear to have lighting now. The children in our group (ranging from just turned 5 to just turned 8 ) had no issues walking down to the harbour or the beach. Our pitches were level, and had plenty of space between them. The ICCC had a rally on over the weekend in a field off the site, and my one complaint was that the toilet block didn't really cope with that extra footfall.
Notwithstanding the issues of shutting down the competition, the site was ok for Irish standards. They're all a rip off, but with young chaps they're going to be the option for us for the foreseeable. The site was that busy, I wonder will the owners actually get over their lack of confidence? If the wildcamping spot is even attractive anymore. Most campers, caravans and tents (of which there seemed to be a dedicated area) seemed to be there for the weekend.
