Motorhomes / Campers

Hi All Sorry News To Spread, the parking area in the Area Known As Shanoon At The Top Of The Pier In Dunmore East Co Waterford Has Been Closed To Campers / Motorhomes As and From August 12th 2013. No Point Going To The Blue Grass Festival Weekend After Next If Your Going To Go In Your Camper / Motorhome. There Is No Place To Park Now In Or Around The Village. A new Campsite Has Opened More Than a Mile Up The Hill Alongside The Golf Club. People will have to decide for themselves whether they think it is suitable or not for them. The road is unlit, has bad bends, is very narrow traffic cannot pass safely, it has a gradient of more than 1in 12, is little more than a dirt track at present whether it will be improved is not known. The Facility's Eg Shower Block, Toilet Block are very modern, the pitches are large and gives Campers a lot of room. For Family's it will be suitable, eg security and safety for children. For others with their own facility's on board the Shanoon would have been more suitable and convenient to the Village. For elderly couples or people whom are infirm or disabled the site will not be suitable and of the Fifty Campers / Motorhomes that were in the Village for the Weekend just passed 9th to 11th August a survey carried out revealed that not one of them would use the site as it was considered to be too far away from the Village with an access approach that was considered unsuitable for leisure vehicles. The reasons given for not allowing the Campers /Motorhomes to use Shanoon anymore were lack of facility's and health and safety. This only seems to have become an issue with the opening of the new Campsite it never was an issue for the last 20 odd years. Coincidence or what. The funny thing about all this is that the Villagers, the Traders are up in Arms Over This Decision. A lot Of Revenue Will Now be Lost To The Village and Surrounding Areas. Sorry Day For The Village and Us The Tourers.

Thanks for the info JimBob.

Such a pity that a new campsite opening will have a negative impact on the area.
Let us hope that the local traders voice their opinions in support of the motorhomes and this decision is overturned.

Was the survey carried out by anyone official or was it among the motorhomes present?

Hi Mark there are usually between 20 to 50 units in Dunmore East each weekend during the summer months. The survey was done by the Camper / Motorhome Owners to get an idea of the spend by the them each weekend. There were 50 units visiting this weekend 48 Irish / 1 French / 1 Australian.

I just had a look on googlemaps for the road that leads from the town centre up to where I believe the camping site is. The road is pretty narrow alright. I'm surprised they were given planning permission for a camping site at the end of this road? It'd be fun trying to get two caravans passed each other on this road...

Again, regarding distance.... I've heard reports of it being "a mile or two" from the town centre, But looking at it here..... it appears to be less than that, at around 450m (1500ft), but it certainly looks like it's un-lit and without a footpath. I'd question the safety for campsite patrons to be walking this road after an evenings entertainment down in the town...

I guess folks will have to make up their own minds on its suitability and if they want to pay up to *€30 for a 4m X 6m patch of ground in a camping site per night...

*Family deal: outfit + two adults + two kids + electricity for only €30

Really, Have they never seen the inside of a camper? Lack of facilities is not the first thing that springs to my mind...

Health and safety is a general term that appears to get tagged onto everything these days...

I'd like to see the engineers report that shows the health & safety concerns of parking motorhomes in that "Shanoon" parking area. Surely cars will also be banned from parking there if that's the case? Maybe its the smell of fish from the local processing plant that is the health & safety concern?

I've also read on several sites that the parking area in question is owned by the Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and is part of the harbour domain, NOT the local council... (unconfirmed)

Email sent at 8.59. Still no response. If this was private sector they should be sacked. Public sector they probably will be promoted for delaying the inevitable . This is what tourists from abroad have to put up with. Touism Ireland still believe in the Celtic tiger, big realisation for them it ended when the caca hit the fan. Your jobs will go too.

Disgusting that the revenue for so many has been affected by the revenue for this newly opened campsite.

E Mail sent. We need to ensure that they understand damage they could be doing to local economy by having as many people contact them as possible. We need to make our point in large numbers not sit back and accept this or any other restriction in parking placed upon us.

I am contacting you in response to the barriers at Shanoon in Dunmore East. I believe that the barriers are to promote a private enterprise just opened in the area, which by Internet communications will not be supported and donations to harbour masters charities and Lifeboats will deminish. Like yourselves waterways Ireland, have benefited from the influx of tourists in motorhomes as have the local communities. How, after thirty years has this become a problem. Internet suggests interference from parties in power and nepotism, access to the new site failing health and safety etc.
This is not good enough and will attract media coverage, as has the opening of the Cobh Aires which has brought Untold praise to the forward thinking councils in this area.
Kind regards
Paul

Taylor, I tried to send the email below to Cobh council @ info@cobh.ie. However it bounced. Not to be outdone and because good work needs to appreciated I emailed each councillor individually thanking them for their forward thinking. List of emails from list of councillors details at the left of Cobh's site

Dear Cobh Council
Your Aires is the talk of Ireland at present. Thank you for your forward thinking, as I am sure the probationary period is proving, that Motorhomers are not self contained spongers but tourists with disposable income which is spent in your area. I personally will be making a 200 mile round trip detour to support the businesses of Cobh as will many of my acquaintances. I would hope and pray that all good motorhomers are abiding by the rules and regulations imposed.
Kind regards
Paul

Lovely email back from Councillor John Mulvihill of Cobh council,.he has offered to take me around beautiful historic Cobh and give me a guided tour.
He has informed me that the only problems encountered at the Aire have been with a few caravans.

Another lesson to other councils on how to deal with tourism.
Congratulations Cobh.

No reply from Dunmore East, but didn't really expect much from them. However an email to Cobh praising their fantastic work resulted in a very pleasant reply.
As my previous employer would have said good work seldom gets it recognised praise but bad work generates ten times the bad publicity that it should.

I agree its disgraceful after that many years, I don't see what the problem is with campers parking there, its a great site n doesn't interfere with anyway the place is always clean after the camper leave there. the village will really loose out on this matter. im going to email the Dunmore east tourism after this. if more people were like cobh it would be great, im sick of trying to tell people that campers don't need a site, well if you have kids it might be a different story for their safety n security you may need a campsite for this reason, but other than that you don't. really disappointed that's one more place of the great places to stay list.
