The vehicle will need to be Physically tested no matter which country it is registered in. French registered vehicles are tested every two years and you must have an address in France as far as I am aware.

The only way I can see a way round your plan is to buy a brand new vehicle registered in UK or NI which doesn't need tested for the first four years.

As for insurance I would imagine the storage facility insurance would have to cover the vehicle while you are not present.

In England private regestered motorhomes and cars require a Mot after 3 years, in Northern Ireland it is presently 4 years.

Hi motorhome 101,

What you are hoping to do is very difficult. It has cropped up on motorhomefacts forum every so often.

From what I read of the experience of others you must have your motorhome MOTed in the UK. The easy answer to that one is if you are based in Northern Ireland would appear to be to get a cheap ferry (or Chunnel) and pop over to Dover and have your van Mot in England. Not sure what you would have to do if you are in the Republic.

There are also road tax implications.

It would appear that to have the van registered in France is a VERY slow, bureaucratic major hassle!!

Perhaps you could buy a Van in France and keep it on French plates and do the French version of MOT which I believe is bi annual.

You could keep the van in an insured storage compound and investigate the possibility of only insuring it for use when it is on the road, which would keep it within the total number of days European use. Perhaps if you offer to inform the insurer of the road use dates you could come to some arrangement.

Best of luck.

Davy

Hi,

I can understand your concern, Motorhome 101 but unfortunately I don't have a solution. As someone else suggested I think the storage facility in France must surely have insurance cover which protects your MH while they store for you. Worth the check-out.
Closer to home, anyone know of any indoor storage facility in New Ross area?

Looking forward to suggestions.

Regards.

Hi All,

Sorry I can't help on the France issue new to the home scene.
Looking for storage for the winter:-
I know that Donedeal.ie in the campervan section sometimes have adverts for secure indoor parking. There is a place in Waterford city jfly if that is any good for you?

Hope everyone gets sorted soon!

Shivster.
