In words of not more than 2 syllables can anyone tell me the easiest way to get Wi-Fi when travelling through Europe. I am an absolute technophobe so need it explained simply. I understand that there is a sort of Pay As You Go system - anyone help. :stupid:

Germany, spain. France but mainly Portugal, I think that it is something like a Pay as You Go dongle thingy

A Europe wide 3G sim in a dongle would work out quite expensive I think.

There are companies which supply sims for each country which may work out cheaper.

Ariels are available. They boost the signal but the wifi usually needs to be paid for somehow.

I have looked into sim cards for france but never for europe wide. Remember to be careful and read all charges etc.

Hi,

we are halfway through a 5 month tour round Europe (with a six month old!!!) which has so far taken us to France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary, and we have had Internet access in all the sites we have stayed on for free, using a couple of iPads. Admittedly sometimes you would have to be close to the reception , but it was always available.

Hi we are in france for last 2 weeks , we are using a joe mobile data sim ,paid €20 for 3 gbfor a month, we have stayed on aires completely and have wifi on our I pad(3G) hasn't let us down yet except on a 2 hr journey across the pyrneese ,at high altitude. I am running my business from france using this with up to 40 emails a day and Skype 3 to 4 times a day ,I have another week in france and wait to see will 3 gb do me , but can be topped up if needed.we also use mapping that
Needs Internet daily, we were in france last year and had to use camps or park in mc Donald's for hours at a time so the freedom this year is amazing ,regards cmd

Only france I think , but we went to Spain for 2 days it worked ,will have to check it out . A spainarid tells me yo can get data sims for Spain and Portugal for small money 1 gb per month, cmd

Hi Jacktherev,

we would love to have done a blog and had considered it, however to do it justice would have taken quite a bit of time and with a baby we felt that we could not do it properly. Currently sweltering in forecast 37 in northern Slovenia!!!! Any tips I will gladly pass on. With a baby it's more of an "experience"!!!! than a holiday.

What i do is call into McDonalds, local hotel, pub, even the campsite you may stay at, there may be a charge in some venues but you should find the facility on your travels.

Just be sure and keep the wee card the Sim comes in. I mislaid mine and now its useless as I can't get a passwords or the PUK code. Need to spend another £39 quid unfortunately.

I love when campsite has WiFi, no time limit, on the pitch and free.
Even having it at reception, but most places you pay.
Otherwise Nigels phone has hotspot, but I tend to only log on quickly, so not checking forum for new topics.
If on Hotspot I do not watch videos, or send photos, unless in ROI
Someone had told me it could work out expensive when roaming....if you don’t have enough data.
Today In Camping Les Iles and free WiFi on pitch near Granville in France....and each pitch has its own private cabin for toilet and shower and for washing dishes. All for €20.

Im using campsite wi fi now,got it free in l'etang de la breche Saumur whilst on the comfort pitch,and using the acsi card at 19 euro per night. If on an ordinary pitch its 4 euro for four hours.

AFAIK streaming SD video uses about1gb per hour, HD video uses about 2gb per hour.
Music is tiny.
If that's not right I'm sure an IT techie will be along soon.

Depends hugely on where you are getting it from, different providers stream at different rates and formats.

HD-quality video uses about 0.9GB (720p), 1.5GB (1080p) and 3GB (FHD) per hour. UHD quality video uses a lot of data. A 4K stream uses about 7.2GB per hour

Music is very little compared to video, but you can also download HD music. Years ago music would be considered huge but it's small now compared to everything else.

A lot of the music streaming services allow you to download (if you are a subscriber) which saves on data when travelling, like wise Netflix allows you to download.

Popit mobile seems to be getting some good reports from motorhomers. Early days though. Reviews on their site are a bit mixed though.
Supposedly full use of data on the continent.

For Spain this trip I ran a Spanish Vodafone SIM.
€20 per month for 140GB.
I had asked advice from people on the ground, from people who works in the industry and their advice was to get a SIM from one of the primary providers like Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica, etc….. which ever was giving the best deal. Vodafone.es seemed to be the best.
They told me that all the other providers are only ‘piggy-backing’ on the main networks, that means they main networks will always prioritise their own subscribers before the others, in short this means a better signal & service from the primary providers.

I found the Spanish vodafone to consistently give 5G in towns/Cities and always a good 4G everywhere else. It was superb for what I needed & never let me down. I installed it in the MiFi dongle and it worked effortlessly as a Wi-Fi router with all other devices connected to it including the TV.

It can be topped up by €5 every 6 months and it will stay “live” and can be used when I go back.
You can also continue to use it in any European country if you keep it topped up by €20/month which is excellent. It runs here in Ireland with a strong 4G service without issue.
Their on-line top up and usage service is superb and in English.

To avail and get a Spanish sim you need to take your passport. Top ups can be bought almost everywhere.

I have a Motorhome WiFi (not the version which takes a SIM) which has not see the light of day in years. It always picked up a strong signal but the speed on campsite WiFi was invariably crap.
I now have the Vodafone Red Unlimited package which gives unlimited data, calls and texts throughout Europe and I use the phone as a hot-spot for the laptop, Google Chromecast TV, etc
The only weakness, if you want to call it that, is sometimes if the signal is a bit weak an external antenna would be nice to have, but so far it hasn't been a real problem.
