Hi there

we have a 1988 winnebago lesharo which is built on a Renault Trafic van, with a 2.2l petrol engine and a semi automatic transmission. We were thinking of changing to a diesel engine. 2.5l. Would anyone know what would suit, as having difficulty getting a 2.5l diesel from a Trafic of this age? Thanks :-)

You will need to be careful, I think they are a different engine to the French European engine that we know.

Hi,

just spotted your post, in 2010 we took a lesharo with the 2.2 petrol engine round Europe for 4 months and she never used a dribble of water or oil. I was sure she would blow a gasket or something in Bosnia or Montenegro and took spares with me but never needed them!!!. Was a fantastic van for two as we left bed made up at the back. We did an article for MMM which appeared in mar 11 I think about our trip. Stick with the petrol!!

The cheapest answer overall would be a gas conversion on the petrol engine, they can be fitted for around £1400 and at about half the cost per litre of petrol/diesel would make more economic sense than spend about £1000 on a Diesel engine and gearbox, plus the problems of getting it matched correctly and then if you had a breakdown finding the correct parts.

Thanks for the information everyone. 8-) We have had trouble with the RV over the summer and have barely had been able to take it out. Did get a diesel engine and manual gearbox for next to nothing but not fitted yet. Looks like the petrol engine needs a full overhaul and there is a knocking between the automatic gearbox and the engine which no one seems to understand. Doesn't slip out of gear just knocks when pressure is off, ie going down hill. Does anyone know anyone who is interested in working on old motors and willing to spend some time on it? It really is a great Rv and very well laid out and we would love to have her fixed up properly and running well. Help :D :D
