A bit of Rust

Hello
Our van has rust on the cab, on bottom of door and below windows .We want to get it sorted. It is a white with light grey around the bottom. We were thinking of getting it sprayed a darker grey for the cab. How much could this cost and where could we get it done?? We live in Co Donegal. Advice would be appreciated!

would it not be as cheap finding a replacement door? depending on make/model/year.

even if you find one a different colour and in good condition, it will prob still be cheaper once painted than the repair route

but if you go the repair/repaint route, I would waxoyl inside all door panels etc when done,

Agree with John - replacement doors are your best bet.

Rust is a nightmare to stop - unless all metal is replaced it will come back and even if it is replaced it will eventually make an appearance on the older bits that haven't been.

What year/model is the van? you might be able to re-skin the doors.

Agreed with all above on this.

Don't talk to me about rust..

I read somewhere that all it takes is one molecule of iron oxide (rust) and one molecule of water to continue the rusting process no matter how well you've removed the rust or how much you've spent on rust curing products... The rust will continue UNDERNEATH the coatings & potions...

The absolute best you can hope for is to slow down the rusting process...

I'd replace the whole door with a rust free one if its an option for you...

Thanks for getting back to me. The van is a Lakia It is built on a Mercedes Sprinter 2003. Though a door would cure that area there are wee bits around the vents at the front. Getting worried now!

If you had said a 1992 talbot I wouldn't have been surprised but a 2003 sprinter! I thought they were made of sterner stuff, you will be able to replace door skins and panels easily.

Don't worry, all the panels should be available for your van. But I would suggest getting it fixed and then waxoyled ASAP to stop any further rusting in any other parts. It might not be as bad as we are thinking :)

There is a Guy just outside Carlow town who breaks nothing only Mercedes Sprinters. We got panels for a Sprinter a couple years back from him and they were cheap. I don't have his name or number handy, someone from Carlow might know.

Hello Altnanean. Give me a shout sometime and I will take a look at it for you and definately a rust free door is the way to go as the rust will always rear its ugly head again no matter how well its repaired. You can PM me or ring me on 07889162964. Cheers Willie.

...We called in to see Willie and it was a bit like going to the doctor or the dentist! We were apprehensive about the cost. Willie reassured us and flourished Tcut and a cloth and poof the rust was almost gone. More intensive work is needed on some of it but Willie reassured that most of it was surface rust and how to avoid this in the future. He told us what to do with the rest and armed with the information we headed home a couple of "happy campers" dreaming of solar panels and satelite domes, instead of having to respray. Thank you Willie! Hope to see you soon re solar panels etc O-)
