to know, about the sealant stuff they use on motorhomes and caravans, the majority of people and places seem to use sikaflex but when you look for info on it there are different versions (different numbers, 512, 221 etc) and whats so special about it compared to silicone stuff from B&Q. Looking on Amazon its around £15 for a tube and the normal stuff for home is about £5 or less if you go to B&M bargains

i had a small grp panel to fix on again and there were two main types of sealant
one seals and sticks solid with no movement
one sticks and stays semi pliable to allow for movement

maybe one of the suppliers/dealers on here can inform us.
think i would prefer a silkaflex product rather than a b and q type

Silicone is rubbish for outdoors, it cracks and deteriorates with the sun.

I am near sure it is 512 sikaflex you need(check though), but it usually says "for motorhome and caravan use" on the side of it.

But what's the difference in the various sikaflexes, reading other (inferior) forums some use 221 and others 512, I don't need it, but it's for future reference should the occasion arise

the Sika website has some good references
you go to the relevant area, eg building/water/grp etc
then it gives you their recommendation for their product to use

seems the sika product is widely used for construction industry, caravans, engineering etc there are many many variants specific to the type of use.

I had a look at their site but thats what confused me, I didnt understand the specifications and was not able to find anything about the type which most people use (512) its why I have asked the collective for their input.

What I have gathered so far is one sets solid, with no flex, the other sets but has flexibility. Thats the easy part, the hard part is which is which

I will confuse you more fat controller . I don,t use sikaflex I use CT1 made in Newry and every bit as good as sikaflex if not better. It is a sealant /adhesive that hardens and seals . I use it for mounting solar panels brackets and satellite dome feet. Never had any bother with it .

Oh ffs thank for that Williy. Does CT1 harden solid or does it have flexibility in the way some of the Sikaflexes do.

I can see a need for the sealer/adhesive being solid with no flexibility just as I can see a need for one that also is flexible. I was thinking of having a tube of each if need be in the shed just in case I need to do a minor repair, I just would love to know what to get and then ask the question of where to get it and also does it go off in the tubes without being opened and can you get it in small tubes instead of the mastic gun type tubes.

ct1 is magic in a tube
can even be used to stick in wet ares with no special prep.

we use it in work for everything.

 byHi FC . CT 1 does harden quite quickly and the shelf life is pretty long when not opened however if you seal the nozzle with the blanking cap that comes with it , it will not harden in the tube for a while although I just can't say how long for sure when opened as we don't have that situation. It is only sold mastic gun size and can be purchased in any good hardware shop.

fat controller i bet you are starting to wish that you had never asked the question, well here is another one for you .
During our line of work we have used sikaflex and CT1 both of which are very good but we have now started to use Ceresit PL700 which i rate very highly as an adhesive and sealant and is available in many colours.
As for silicone it is pure rubbish and should never be used near a camper if you want a permanent repair.
Good luck in your quest and no doubt you will be an expert in sealants by the time this thread has finished. :-)
