lightweight gas refill

Hi, I've been a member for a couple of weeks now, enjoying reading all the posts etc. I have a question, does anybody know where I can get a 6kg lightweight refill. I bought my van in England & it had a normal cylinder and also a lightweight one. I contacted Calor & they told me that Downshire Caravans do them, but it's a different cylinder to mine. The one in my van is a RED propane cylinder but Downshire only sell a grey one, supposedly for barbeques. They said they have been trying to get Calor to supply them with the red ones now for a few years without success. According to the chap in Downshire they're only available in England.

The calor dealer in Lisburn usually has the red 6kg ones, I got one during the week at Hagans and they also had the new lightweight ones, but they use a different pigtail to the red one.

Was staying in Tollymore last night and went down to to filling station in Newcastle (on Castlewellan rd). They have all sorts of cylinders.Nearly certain I saw small red ones. You could call them and ask.

I also use 6kg propane and have difficulty getting refills I live in Bangor and can get them in Bangor Fuels the only other place I found was a filling station in Bushmills. I recently ran out while in Galway and tried at least 20 places between Galway and the border with no joy, I was told on more than one occasion "that is an English fitting "so I have come to the conclusion these bottles are not available in ROI.
Just to clarify we are taking about the same bottles mine are Red 6kg propane with a female screw fitting on the bottle.

I have looked at the calor.ie website and the size of cylinders available are as follows, ROI - propane9kg light weight, 11kg and 19kg (larger available but wont fit in motorhomes!) NI - propane 3.9kg, 6kg, 9kg lightweight, 11kg, 13.15kg (larger also available)

So the only comon bottles north and south are the 9kg light weight and the 11kg

This would mean for me to have a common one which I could get anywhere would involve swapping over to the 9kg if it fits as well as a new pig tail to fit the cylinder. I dont know about everyone else but although my van is suposed to take 11kg bottles they wont actually fit through the door as I checked the dimensions last year when I got the van, so need to find out the dimensions of the 9kg lightweight and check that out.

I rang Calor to get the lowdown on cylinders and the 6kg is only available in the north, there is general availabilty of the 9kg light weight both north and south and there will by the summer be general availability of a 6kg light weight.

There is approximately a 2-3kg weight saving in the 6kg cylinders.

The guy I spoke to didnt have the dimensions of the 6kg lightweight but the 9kg one is 314mm high and 306mm wide, against the 6kg normal one being 495x256mm.

He also said that they all use the same fittings, but personally I would check that out with a supplier first because I was told that they are different.

I hope this helps !!!!

Thanks for your replies everyone, I think I will just wait until later on in the summer to see if they are available.

Hi All,
just recently at a national rally in Limerick, the ROI southern sales rep for calor (Tony) launched a new aluminium lightweight 6kg propane bottle. The catch is its a different fitting yet again, it's the patio heater type,
If we had had 40 of the English propane 6kg bottles we would have sold out as the weather was cold and I suppose it was the first rally of the year for many, anyway total number of bottles in Limerick area with English/ female thread = 4
We had to send to Cork for 3 and cleaned them out also!!

I wonder if we can get a set of adapters to fit the regulators for all of the bottle types? Spanish, French, etc. And if it came up on Dragons den in the near future,,,,,,,,, would we have to get a trained specialist/qualified engineer to fit them?

rob.

i filled my own cylinders so didn't need to worry about fittings as used the same adapter for autogas.
safe enough if you obey ALL instructions.

so many adapters now required depending on where you are or what you have.
