I've gone Belfast Birkenhead then the Channel Tunnel these past few years. Its quite expensive but I used it as it suited where I was going in France. Its a long drive down from Birkenhead and the M25 is a nightmare. This year I'll be using Celtic Ferries to Cherbourg as I think its the best and cheapest.
Agree with jack down through England can be a nightmare. Travelled with Celtic Ferries last year with no issues. Got a good deal with Irish Ferries this year from Rosslaire to Roscoff.

Depends on the time of year, I have found that July and August it can be cheaper to do the land bridge Dublin-Holyhead then Dover-Calais, but it depends also on where you are heading as to which would suit best

RO 06 we were in Annecy 2 years ago. Probably your best route would be Dublin Hollyhead as you are living in Dublin and drive down to the Channel Tunnel. You'll have a great time in Annecy we really enjoyed it. Don't miss the Marketnin Annecy.m
