License Query

Need a bit of info on a license issue regarding a converted '01 Mercedes 413cdi.

If it was a van, you'd need a rigid license to drive it as it's over the weight limit for a car license.

However, it weighs 2.3 tons I think and we did get a reduced plate for it from mercedes. Just looking to check the legality of it all?

All input welcome.

If you are in the uk the law changed.
my van is over car weight but my licence covers me up to 7.5 tons. my son is having to sit a rigid test to drive it as his licence does not cover him. it depends how old your car licence is as to what you can drive.

Hi Mannix86, Very welcome to the site. :-)

Your post is very unclear! as this forum is both North and South there is different laws on driving.
It is not what it weighs that matters but what is on the VIN Plate, GVW this usually can be found under the bonnet, and some times just inside the drivers door on or around the step. So if you can locate this we would know what the GVW of your van is in order to help you better.

Regarding the driving licence, your can drive up to 3,500 kg on a B licence see here Driveing Licence Categories South

P.s. My old van was a Merc Sprinter 412 twin wheel which was plated at 4 ton, but only weighed 3.6 ton, hence I then needed a C1 Licence.

this is where it would be handy if people put their location on there profile as this would make answers relivent to your location i.e. your county name is all thats needed

I think, up here at least, if you passed before "97 you are ok up to 7.5 ton, if after you"re stuck at up to 3.5 ton. Don"t even ask about towing as that raises all sorts of other questions, trailer tests etc.... For me, I have a c1 or class 2 which allows me to drive our RV at 9 ton or rigid trucks up to 32 ton (I think?), passed it a while back. It was a lot more simple (class1,2,3) before Europe decided to change all the categories etc... :(

Hi all,

I'm in the south. Only have a B license. I think the GVW is 4tons on the plate, as I said, we got a reduced plate from a Mercedes dealership to bring this down.

The van only weighs 2.2t now as far as I am aware and will never be more as it's now a camper. 4t would obviously be the maximum weight fully loaded which will never be the case again. I just can't see the reason for needing a C1 license when the weight will never be over the B license capacity.

Any one experience something similar?
