Celtic Ferries

 ·

I used Celtic Ferries for the first time on Wednesday from Cherbourg to Rosslare when I was taking my Citroen Mehari home from Bordeaux. I arrived quite early at Cherbourg (in fact before the ferry arrived from Rosslare) and I found the staff at Reception very friendly and helpful. Check in was very relaxed and the staff on the ferry very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them. The cabin was very clean and comfortable in the front of the ship.

The meal was excellent, lovely and hot and very well presented and also at a reasonable price. Glad too that the wine and drinks were not a rip off either very reasonably priced in the light of other ferries. Eight odd euros for a bottle of good red wine is not by any means a rip off. If I'm being honest the only thing I would feel Celtic Ferries failed on was their Internet connection and im being very fussy. I paid 5 euros for an hour connection which was very slow. Although I must be honest when I made the purser aware of this he said to stay connected and to come back to him and he would sort something out for me. I felt in light the the high standard of the seevice I received it would have been mean of me to go back.

Thanks to Celtic Ferries for a super efficient crossing in very bad weather and an excellent staff that you should be proud of. I have travelled with many ferries over the years but can truthfully say Celtic is away right there at the top if not the BEST.

I will certainly be using them again and the 10 pc discount to Craic members is icing on the cake. Well done Celtic -full marks from me you provided the high standard that I expectm

Watch out for a car pulling a trailer and going at about 30mph  I won't be taking the motorhome until the summer. You will be a full day ahead of me.

Went through all the options on wed morn looking for a ferry to France for the summer and Celtic ferries came out far ahead for price this year. €336 return from rosslare to Cherbourg in July and return in end of August. Going to France this year for £7 more than we can cross the Irish Sea. I have emailed Stenaline and asked for an explaination , will post their reply when I get one. This is the first time we have used Celtic ferries so great to have a first hand report from an unbiased user. Ps. Also got 10% discount through this web site. Thanks lads.

Wow, That is seriously good price, we are going late June and we are paying around 580euro with Irish Ferries and that was with their discount code. Celtic were dearer even with the MC discount. Is there Cabins included in that price?

The two of us had a four berth cabin as well last year on-the celtic ferry, it was a bit dated but very comfortable. We went out with Brittany Ferries and had a two berth cabin, The top bed came down out of the ceiling and was terrible, it was tilting out and you got the feeling that you were going to fall out. I didn't get a minutes sleep and had to pull in when we got to France and get a couple hours kip. I don't think I would fancy going to France with out a cabin!

I would like to add to Jacks comments about Celtic Link Ferries.

I came home from France last weekend on the Celtic Link €1 sailing.

As I am sure you would expect, it was a very busy sailing.
The staff must have been under big pressure as it was the longest queue I have ever seen for vehicle check in at cherborg. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The cabin was great and maybe even nicer than Irish ferries.

Food in the restaurant was well presented and very tasty. Restaurant staff were more than helpful and friendly.

The only problem we had with the whole experience was sailing times were not as suggested but I would imagine that could not be avoided on such a busy sailing.

In short, well done Celtic Link Ferries, I concur with the remarks made by Jack.

I would be happy to recommend this sailing.

Mark Did you have your sailing booked for this sailing or was it by chance. If booked did the ferry company refund you your original sailing price .

Thats an interesting one and I would love to know. I think Mark has made a mistake as you could never get from V=Cherbourg to Rosslare for 1€. No doubt he will tell us.

Hi Jack the rev,

The 1€ fare was correct.

It was part of a promotional price aimed at getting people to come to Ireland for St. Pat's day. It was marketed as 'The Gathering'. The price only applied for the France to Ireland leg on one day only, ordinary price for the outbound trip. A half price trip!

It had been advertised on here and a mate of mine went to Cherbourg the week before and did some D Day museums etc. However they got snowed in on some sites and it seems in Brittainy they are as unprepared as we are here. Deep drifts, roads and shops closed, power out.

They enjoyed it all the same.

Davy

Yes €1 Jack.....

As Davy says it was a special which was booked months ago. Cabin included.
There were loads of motorhomes on the sailing too.

celtic ferry prices-do you lose out if you book early?

 ·
Posted: 31.03.2013  ·  #25
We have used celtic ferrys in the past and found no problems-
this time however when we booked our return from cherbourg to rosslare
it cost 188.7 euros---(booked on the 19/march/2013)
A few days later we found that the price was 160 euros.
since then i have telephoned once and emailed twice --with no reply
from the ferry company.
we are travelling up through portugal in thick fog and heavy rain and are parked up today
in Belmonte just below Gaurda -is´nt it great when you find that you have free internet
and something trivial to complain about.
Have never seen it so wet here.Anyway it seems that despite the ferry companys actively
encouraging us all to book well in advance, they chose to deny the early payers any current
fare offers- just does not seem right.
enough whingeing for one day -at least its not cold.
ps not a free member i just paid up-

I had a similar issue with Irish Ferries last year. Book by mid january and get an extra 10% off.

They extended the offer after I had booked (of course). I rang and complained but initially got nowhere, I asked to speak to a supervisor, more to get it off my chest than anything, but credit to them they gave me a further 10% discount, Probably because the website still showed the offer closing mid Jan.

Try again, and welcome to the site.

Well I have had a very relaxing and enjoyable crossing with Celtic link, would I use them again? Yes most definitely. The food was good and reasonably priced compared to Irish ferries and the cabin very comfortable even though the tv only had about 3 channels to watch. I caught up on a lot of well deserved sleep. I am now at the hacienda in Spain and enjoying the warmth of the sun, even had the shorts on today when I arrived.

How's the weather at home

Lucky you Fat Controller it would skin a louse here its that cold. Glad you had a safe journey and enjoyed Celtic Link. I think they are very good if not the best and I'll be using them again. Enjoy your time in Spain. Glad you are still able to keep contact with us. I'm sure you will enjoy a glass or two of Sangria maybe something stronger!

The top one and one from bottom are the suites, I can recommend them for that little bit of extra comfort. We had one on our way over to France and you get a living room with a bowl of fruit, tea and coffee , non alcoholic mini bar and a tv all in the living room, you then have a large double bed and bathroom. There is also plenty of storage if you want to hang up your clothes. The only thing you must remember to ring on board are plug adapters as they are all European sockets and ladies, bring a hair dryer as there isn't one. You also get a free breakfast.

Just booked our French trip with Celtic, can"t praise Rory enough, a real top fella. Managed to get us on a sailing that was previously marked as having no cabins, gave me a super discount and took on board the mess up of last year (long story, tho" not really Celtic"s fault). The ship"s perfectly adequate, ok, so it doesn"t have 3 bars, a cabaret and 4 restaurants like a "cruise ferry may have, but, all I want to do after a meal and pint or two, is retire to a cabin anyway. I would never overnight without a cabin that"s for sure, having done it a few times, it isn"t fun ! BTW we"re out on the 20 July, anyone else on that sailing ?

Paul, glad to hear you got a good deal. As I've said in here Rory is a gentleman to deal with completely honest and no waffle like some guys. I've found all the Celtic staff to be super. Enjoy your trip in July we are not going until end of Sept early Oct but I'll be using Celtic thats for sure.

We are booked with Irish Ferries this year as they were cheaper on the dates we are travelling than Celtic, Maybe I should have phoned Rory before I booked it. We came home from France with them last year and as said in a previous post ,it is not a cruise liner but it was quite comfortable and the staff were excellent.

Paul,
Me Mary & Natasha (14) are out on the 13th July for 3 weeks. As you said all you need is good food. Somewere to have a pint or 3 and get your head down. Its great for my wee man Charlie. He can stay in the van instead of a cage like Irish Ferries use. Havent got a clue were am going yet. Once I get to Cherbourg ill turn right and head down the west coast. Basically follow the sun providing there is one. :D
