Howth

 ·

Hi Folks, just spent a few nights at Howth. as usual, very quiet. 27 motorhomes one night, about 23 the next. Lots of silly green hats, mostly worn by non-locals!

Last night (Sunday 17th) there were a gang of over enthusiastic youngsters, demolishing a waste bin - parked less than a 100 yards away was a Garda Van, they paid no notice to this vandalism. They were well away from the motorhomers so no problem there.
A source of major annoyance to us is the amount of doggy pooh on the streets - it is no bother to carry a plastic bag - we always lift and dispose of whatever our mutt produces, but an awful lot of people don't. the signs outlining the fines for not doing so are obviously not doing their job.

Enjoyed a lovely Haddock meal from the take away and then a good value meal and bottle of red in the Waterside on Sunday.

It was coolish in the motorhome during the day with no heat!!!, but coooosssy at night under a duvet. Saturday was a lovely bright sunny day, Sunday was more normal - cool, overcast and the odd shower.
Still, Howth is a lovely spot and as far as we are concerned, some local establishments do ok from us motorhomers.
Regards

Bob

Say they spend £50 per day x approx 50 ( 2 days worth of spending) = £2500 or almost 2800 Euro.

It probably will.
It's rather strange (not really)---
We didn't witness motorhomers emptying rubbish out of bins and then trying to smash them,(although the Garda were only parked a few yards away) or throwing litter out the door of the motorhome and yet it's us that the Council members want to penalize!!!
A strange world.
The Motorhome has given us a new lease of life, enabling us to get out and about and yet the opposition to motorhomes in this country is incomprehensible. Without it we would not be able to visit the range of places that we have been able to visit this past five years, and yet parking is turned into an obstruction to you stopping and with regards to staying overnight, it is just a chorus of no, no, no without any rhyme or logical reason. If you arrive in a car you are welcome, if you arrive in a motorhome, you're not.

just back from Howth Harbour
stayed over Fri and Sat night
about 20 vans there both nights.

we were just facing the lifeboat station and a quick survey of vanners heading to the chippy Fri night, including us, and we estimated the chippie alone made about 120 euro from the motorhomes !

I hope the chippy makes their view known to the authorities. We were they are a few week ago and we spend about €180 in Howth on one thing and another. The business folk need to wake up and realise we who motorhome spend money when we visit a place and we are not a nuisance.

Stayed in Howth on numerous occasions and never been asked to donate unless this is something new. Did you ask for an ID????. Did you give??.

I have heard of some paying the harbour master if they have used an EHU, but that was on the other pier beside the restaurants, but never of any one paying or being asked to pay at the central pier, I know I havent.

We were there the weekend of the 24th May (ulster rugby match) this was our second time staying in Howth. We were asked on Sunday for a donation of 5 euro by a man who came to our door. He said they do a collection once a year to give to the harbour master to say thanks. When i was reluctant to hand over my cash, he said i could leave it with the guy in the hymer at the end of the pier. A while later we were in our friends van when 2 women called again asking for 10 euro and our number plates to show we had paid. The couple in the van next to my friend said they were told this was done every few months. I told the women that i had already made my own donation to the RNLI. While I am willing to contribute to the lifeboats, I am not prepared to give my money to strangers on the quayside.

Was there myself last weekend in middle pier. The collection is done by regulars for the RNLI as a gesture of goodwill and thanks for letting Motorhomes stay there. It was giving to the Harbour Master to pass on to the RNLI. With a list of motorhome regs Garda were also made aware of same.€140 was passed over.

It's all about creating the right goodwill with the authorities in Howth. :D

Phoebe, We were in Kilmore Quay the same weekend and a man and woman also came to our door looking for a Donation for the Life boats. They appeared Genuine, But I met a man in a motorhome near us in Dunmore East on Sunday and he said he knew the woman and she had no permit to be collecting. I don't know! Anybody know is it genuine or bogus?

I'm more than happy to give a donation to anywhere I stay, whilst we also contribute to the local community, but I won't be giving my cash to strangers knocking on my door - I wouldn't do it a home. Just because they appear genuine doesn't mean they are, baddies don't look different. :o :D

Howth Harbour

 ·

Called in at Howth Harbour on Sat afternoon with the intention of stopping over all the piers & car parks were completely packed you couldn't have parked a bicycle never mind a MH anywhewre in the town. On the central pier cars and MH all parked around each other and many couldn't get out even if they wan't to, I know its first come but I could see why locals would complain about MH and if this good weather continues they will require some form of regulation.
We aborted the visited to Howth and moved north to Rush and booked in North Beach caravan park a very pleasant site with all the MH's overlooking the beach @ 10 euro p/person & 2 euro for shower. Good MH service point, only negative long walk to pubs etc about 25 mins.

Dont do what I did in Rush and try to get to the beach, on the right as you come into Rush. I ended up having to reverse back up the hill until I could find an entrance which I could turn in as the height barrier stoped me getting into the carpark!
