If I am going South, what is the best way to get a good price from Sterling to Euro?

ATM - debit card? Change it before going via Bank/Post Office?

What do you do?

If you are anywhere near Naas give me a call and we can exchange at the currency rate pertaining at that time. No commission! We are off to Scotland for wedding in April so will have to purchase sterling anyway! Going back there again in Aug for the Tattoo.

Just remembered we are also heading North to Ballygalley next month for a few days....sans camper though. Could also pay my sub if we can meet up. Another slightly cheaper way to exchange in bank is to get a student son/daughter to do so as they get it commission free with student card.

That's a great offer Seamus, thanks I will keep that in mind.

I am not that far from Ballygalley, I'm sure we could arrange something, maybe you could stay an extra night at our Cl :) - what date will you be there?

If you need euro cash I can get it at the current rate without commission any time you need it.

My cousin does trade fairs in the south and refuses to pay bank charges to exchange to sterling. He always has euro.

I have a Sainsburys Credit Card it does not charge for cash withdrawals or purchases world wide. Also world wide travel insurance is included for all the family all year. The only down side is a £5 per month service, I reckon it pays for it self with no other fees as long has you pay it off every month also you don't need to carry large amounts of cash just top up at a ATM .

Your EHIC which you apply for through the post office or online is free and entitles you to free treatment through the EU. Health insurance usually means you pay for the treatment up front and reclaim later.

Good way for UK residents is Nationwide credit card, load it up before you travel and withdraw at no charge and best exchange rate at any ATM in the EEC. Used it in France Spain and ROI without problem.

:-) my understanding is that N.I.and the south have a reciprical arrangement for health care and you only need to bring your medical card with your health care number on it

On the subject of travel insurance
This has had a lot of coverage on radio ulster over the past few weeks as many people from Northern Ireland travel abroad from airports or ports in southern Ireland and are unaware that they do not have full coverage on their travel insurance. Almost all UK based policies state that your insurance begins when entering a uk port or airport. This is not extended to leaving southern Ireland. Most insurance companies will not totally invalidate your policy but will not provide liability for flight loss or delay and having spoken to a few agents today they have yet to come back to me about repatriation.
Some older family members are flying from Dublin to Canaries for a week and the single trip cover has now risen from approximately £38 to £98. I spoke to a friend in Nationwide who are introducing a new savings account soon which will include travel insurance and she said that at a training session earlier this month this subject was broached and they were told that the flight delay or cancellation from a non UK departure would not be covered as the company had not envisaged this problem when rolling out the training in mainland UK, and they hoped to resolve the problem before introducing the account.

It seems the pound is dropping in value against the Euro, maybe time to buy if you are heading away to Euroland this year. Predicted to continue to fall.

Rate this morning is 1.164, it has risen because of the Itlaian election result. I dont think its worth worrying about too much unless you are intending to spend large amounts of money, although dont get me wrong as every penny counts
