Hello all, I've the bog standard propane gas bottle connection on a 20 year old van. On the pic added below you will see the washer behind the contact point on the van side. Do I need another washer outside this before the bottle to make an air-tight seal? I always have a slight odour of gas which maybe is not so good!!! TIA Con

Not on the Roi connection there is only that seal, you can get replacement seals, but you should probably replace the Pigtail, if the hose is 20 years old, all gas hoses have a life span, check the date on the hose.
I carry a can of leak detector spray and always spray around the connection and pillar valve after changing bottles, propane tanks sometimes stink, I think they may get a bit of spray of gas around the pillar valve and top of cylinder, when they release the filling clamp.

I don't know about Ireland but in Italy (very similar connector) all cylinders (even when refilling) are supplied with a plastic cap that also incorporates a rubber washer.

In any case, pigtails usually last ten years, after which they must be replaced.

Some of the caps here have a rubber sealing washer, but others have a solid rubber seal ( no Hole).
The date on the hose is the manufacture date, and the life span is 10 years. I always make sure of this date in order to give me the recommended service life of 5 year.
