Evening all, we're off to Bilbao from Rosslare mid-May and we're thinking just head down south via Madrid, Toledo and Seville before turning west along the south coast and north via Portugal coast line etc. We have 6 weeks in total so no rush. We used a Big&Go tag on the toll rds in France last year and it was so easy. I'm pretty sure the same tag is good for Spain and Portugal but my question is...which lane do I take at the Toll station. I'd prefer to know in advance and can't find any answer on Youtube etc. I'm sure it's very obvious when there but I'd be happier knowing beforehand, any info greatly appreciated..."Mìle Buìochas(a thousand Thanks)!!!

I picked up a fine on the motorway in Portugal last year. Aa I entered the motorway there was a big sign telling visitors to the country to top and register their vehicle for the motorway. I dutifully did so but went through a toll booth and noted the something didn't look right. I to stopped at the next toll an was asked for my ticket. I produced my receipt for my registration but a told that that it didn't work for that part of the motorway. Think it cost me about £60 or thereabouts.

I'd suggest making a slight detour via Segovia, a little Northwest of Madrid and visiting the incredible Roman aqueduct. It's mindboggling when you see it up close and see the size of the stone blocks that were manoeuvred into place 2000 years ago. There's an Aire at the bullring, a two minute walk from the start of the aqueduct, but it can be busy. https://www.google.ie/maps/sea…FQAw%3D%3D Finish off your evening with the local traditional dish of suckling pig, very tasty. We found this restaurant excellent. https://www.google.ie/maps/pla…FQAw%3D%3D

As said it’s the one with the big “t”. Just be aware that some lanes have height barriers, usually to the left. Drive slowly into the lane and your tag should ping before you get very far in and the barrier goes up.

The emovis website has lots of info on the use of tags for France, Spain and Portugal. https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk/

Re water distribution in Spain, the Muslim conquest developed the system by building “acequia” to deliver water locally and communally. There are some incredible feats of engineering with many built across extremely steep hillsides. Together with terracing it enabled many crops to be grown and watered and the terraces slowed down the rainfall. I’m constantly amazed by the amount of work it must have taken, often in very challenging terrain.

Thanks for all that, especially info on the Aqueduct so it's on the list. Any other suggestions would be welcome also but we're happy to follow our noses! ^_^

Unless you're in an absolute mad rush stick to the "N" roads or less. No tolls and far more relaxed and interesting driving. Any particular routes planned ?

In fact I’ll skip the like Tommy, that’s brilliant, I don’t think there’s a dedicated Spain thread on the craic but this map should be on it,👍

Asturias,Galicia, picos if it’s warm enough, then toss up between Gijón or Oviedo, all being well

I walked from Oviedo to Santiago de compostela, the area is beautiful, the track wouldn't suite a motorhome :D

There are different types of toll roads in Portugal. Some roads are monitored electronically, Gantrys at various points, similar to Dublin's M50. Other roads use Ticket and Pay systems, where you take a ticket on entering the Toll Road, and pay when exiting.
However, there is a Tag system called Via Verde which, to the best of my knowledge, requires a Portuguese Tag (Via Verde tag). On these roads there will be a dedicated lane for tag holders. Do not use this lane unless you are 100% sure that your tag will work.
Your Bip and Go tag will, almost certainly work, on the electronically tolled roads but not on the others. Your route along the south coast will take you onto the A22 Motorway which has electronic tolls so you should be OK there but be careful as you head north towards Lisbon and stay out of the Via Verde lanes.
Enjoy your trip!

But if you by accident or intentionally go on motorways in Spain in camper is it just traditional pay at booths with cash

If you get to the West coast there's a nice privately run Aire here, https://www.google.ie/maps/pla…FQAw%3D%3D The guy speaks good English and is very easy going. There's a small rocky beach directly below the Aire, exit via the lower gate, or a 15 min walk will bring you to the much larger beach Praia Da Langosteira just north of the Aire. A nice breakfast can be had in the small hotel across the road then explore the town and drool over the boats in the port. Have a delicious lunch here https://www.opiratafisterra.com/ I'd recommend the platter of mixed shellfish and crustacea. You can then walk it off by visiting the lighthouse about 3Km away, the traditional end of the Camino. A little further south is my favourite chill-out spot so far in Spain. https://www.google.ie/maps/pla…FQAw%3D%3D A privately run Aire 2 min walk from the beach. No shops nearby so come well stocked with food and drink. There's a bar and restaurant about halfway down the beach but hasn't been open anytime I've been there.
