Marine Rated battery fuse

I was researching one of these MRBF fuses recently and believe they give extra protection from the battery positive terminal to the main fuse and also from shorting of the battery itself....apparently lithium batteries if they short circuit can give off 10 times the amps of the battery size which can melt standard fuses and cause the current to arc across the fuse meaning the fuse is useless...I know the chances of this happening may be slim and the bms probably should shut the battery down, but it does sound like a nice bit of added protection god forbid the battery short circuited...there are one's you can get which accommodate two fuses so you could have one with a higher rating for where the inverter is connected and a lower rating fuse for the lower amperage stuff which is connected to the battery...

I have a 150ah lithium battery which allows a maximum discharge rate of 150amps so I was thinking of putting one of these with a 200amp rating fuse on the positive terminal of the battery for the inverter, and maybe a 100amp fuse on the wiring for the van side which currently has a 80amp fuse...

Just wondering has anyone with more knowledge than me on this any input, are they worth installing or is it OTT...cheers🙂.

I put in a 300AHr fogstar drift in my set up recently and used a Blue Sea MRBT fuse with two terminals. One for the invertor rated at 150A and once for the general camper rated at 80A(always remembering the fuse is to protect the cable and not the device). My research led me to believe there was no other resaonable way of doing it given the level of power stored in the battery. Very interesting discussion here - apologies to linking to outside forum. Fuse discussion on MHF

They are not cheap but neither is the van or my life!

Good info there and seems to be a hot topic on that forum....yeah I think I'll add one to the battery live terminal as added protection and maybe go for the 150amp fuse for the inverter and 80amp fuse for the van side, the bms shuts down the battery at 150amps anyway so hopefully it shouldn't blow the fuse easily if the mrs overloads the battery as usual with everything plugged in at once😱☹..better safe than sorry i suppose with added protection...I'll try and get a spare fuse or two also and have them in the van as I'm sure they are not easily got....looks like ch Marine in Cork sells them.
