A bit disappointing

Winter 24.
At the end of September I have a ferry from Rosslare to Bilbao one way outside pet friendly cabin booked its just over €700 for us and and a MH upto 8m long.

Then we have a ferry (Grimaldi) from Barcelona port to the Italian port near Rome 18 hour overnight crossing in a captain’s class cabin which allows us to bring the dog in the cabin, price €370 all in.

And what I was looking forward to the most was an Anek line ferry from Bari to Patras 17 hour crossing parked on the open deck camping on board the MH with electric and full access to the ship. However I got a text yesterday saying they had to change the ferry and the one we will now be on doesn’t allow camping on board. Instead we have been given a two berth outside pet friendly cabin for the same price €306. I enjoyed camping on board last time the comfort of my own cabin in my MH but I still looking forward to returning to Greece.

So two ferry crossings with two different operators are costing less than BFs one crossing. Admitted I did get discounts from Grimaldi and Anek lines but the only discount I got from BF was an upgrade to a flexible ticket.

I’m not sure of my return date or route from Greece I shall make that decision when I need to.

Have a great time Jamie. Stenaline 4 hour crossing Rosslare to Fishguard , a 4 hour crossing £300 stg. Maybe it's the port charges at Rosslare making the difference. 🤔

Personally I think it’s that to get to mainland Europe from the uk or Ireland there is so little choice so the operators can charge almost what they want.

The price between GB and Ireland is bonkers but without a really big bridge there is no choice in a MH.

Anyway I will suck it up and enjoy my travels all the same.

The problem is the government in Ireland don't know we live on an island, when we had an Irish owned shipping company, they decided we didn't need it. And the current lot haven't got the balls to keep the foreign ships outside the 12 mile limit until they stop the piracy

That DFDS ferry rosslare to Dunkirk ,24 hours ,was 680 euro one way I thought it was pricey enough but
That’s 3 people and 4 meals each in July, high season,700 is way too expensive I think even September

Our onward journey to France we travelled from Portsmouth to Caen on the le Mont St Michel, an overnight crossing incuding 4 Berth outside cabin, breakfast and the dog staying in the car. Because I'm in Owners Abroad club with Brittany Ferries, I got over £90 discount, so the final cost to me was £330. Brittany give discount for members of Owners Abroad on all cross channel ferries and ferries direct from England to Spain, they do not allow any discounts on ferries out of Ireland. I wonder why 🤔.

I did look at Rosslare to Cherbourg for the end of September with a pet friendly cabin and it was around €400 but then I would have over 1000km drive to Spain and when I factor in fuel and tolls the €300 saving is not much of a saving if I pay €200 on fuel alone.

I had to do the maths(rough as it is). If you got the ferry to Cherbourg then it's 3212km to Patras and at 8l/100km and €1.70/L that comes to €436 on diesel alone. While I'm all for traveling in my camper to whereever I'm going that's not a bad way to get to Greece. You arrive fresh and probably faster unless you're pushing yourself every day. Something to store at the back of my mind for when I get to that stage - thanks

We drove from Cherbourg to Bari (Italy) last year and got the ferry from Bari to Patras. We took our time in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Switzerland before we drove into Italy. It was a great trip. This year we will avoid so much driving and take advantage of the ferrys. Coming home may be all driving apart from the final bit back to Ireland, we are not sure yet.

I suppose it all depends on how long you have and what you want to do with your time.

Just drove to south east Bulgaria and back ,mostly on motorways,26 to the gallon average I think,4,300 miles, the biggest pain for us was tolls, you can drive the entire country of Serbia on brilliant roads for 25 euro, other countries like Austria and France are way to expensive we roughly spent as much on tolls as fuel, you must put 75 euro minimum on the go box ,just to register,if your over 3.5 t

The tolls are getting crazy. It normally costs us over €200 return from Cherbourg to Meribel. That's paying Class 2. It really should be double that because if our extra axle. France is starting to go toll booth free so you have to register your vehicle or, buy a go box or pay within a certain time. Looks like it's time for the National roads and their roundabouts

Don’t start about go boxes,i came home to a go box fine of a whopping 2euro because the Slovenian one dropped below its limit (25 euro)allowed by the road authorities

Annoyingly I have to delay my trip and initial route so I’m now on BF from Rosslare to Cherbourg and then driving to Barcelona port. I’m intending on avoid the French toll roads unless the alternative routes are not available/sensible.
I avoided Austria last year because of the go box requirement and did Switzerland instead where even at over 3.5 ton I could pay a set fee using the Via App.
