Here is a question, I was asked the other day. Anyone ever try for a trade in deal in the EU.
It made me think about what would happen.
You know when you are away, you always have an eye for the next replacement, there's so much better selection.
If you returned to France ( or EU) with a Motorhome you had imported, to trade it in for a newer one.
Obviously there would be a cost, to put it back in their system.
Would they put it back on its original reg plate.? or would they have to re-reg it, with a new plate.
I can't see anyone in the EU interested taking in a trade on a RHD. But has anyone ever tried it with a RHD or LHD.?

Do you get your VRT beck if you export it back? Unless you do I would have thought the van left or RHD will be worth more in Ireland.

That's an extremely sore point.
Unlike cars which are VRT Catagory A and can benefit from a partial refund of VRT when exported, Motorhomes are put in the non-refundable VRT Category B.
Category B VRT is a fixed €200 (except for motorhomes) and one can understand the non-refundable aspect but motorhomes which carry a significant VRT burden as cars do should, in fairness, be treated the same and put in Category A.

Motorhomes being in Category B is a legacy issue from the time when they were subject to the same VRT as commercial vehicles if over 3,000kg unladen weight.

Back in the day when I had a few bob, on a few occasions I got a deal to change from dealers in Germany, Belgium and France but never bit the bullet.
So to answer the question, if you have a lefthand drive you can get a trade-in deal in Europe without any hassle.

I don't think they have anything against them per se. I think it's just pure genuine ignorance among eople who have never been fortunate enough to own one and because some motorhomes may resemble a delivery van, that's the category they put them all in when they are drafting rules and regulations.

That's great but it's 20 years ago, and they have done F**k all since.
How any Motorhome owners have died since, and we still send wasters to represent us to Europe.

Unfortunately we have no representative body, either drawn from the clubs or the trade to lobby on behalf of the consumer.
Unlike for example the farmers nobody shouts when government screws us over.
