Anyone know what is the current situation ( from experience ) for a student form ROI using their own Car while in Collage in the UK, or would it be better to pick one up over there?

AFAIK if you are only temporarily in a foreign country (holidays, college, work), but you're principal place of residence is Ireland you can take your car with you without having to transfer it to the DVLA and get a UK reg. no.
What I would check is how you are fixed with insurance, but I think there is no maximum to the time you can be in the UK provided it's not a permanent change of residence and your principal country of residence remains Ireland.
Think of a person living in Dublin and studying or working in Belfast while temporarily staying in digs there

I'd check the car insurance, some insurers only cover 3 rd party while out of ROI and others only cover 30 days, they're slimy with the small print once you leave ROI
