Motorhome Swap?

 ·

Hi There,

Is anybody interested in a swap for a few weeks / the summer / the year? I have a lovely A-Class 2012 McLouis Nevis. Only 28,000kms on it. I'm considering selling it because I'd like a new layout now that I'll have kids to join us. However, I think it would be a good idea to test out a different layout and make sure I like it first before changing.

Obviously, we would make sure everything is above board insurance wise and make sure both sides are happy and have peace of mind in who they are swapping with beforehand. But assuming all that can be sorted, would anyone here be interested in a swap?

I'm looking for something modern, that can sleep 4 - 5, but not two double beds. Ideally, I'd like 3 or 4 people to be able to sleep separately. I'd love to try out something with a U-lounge in the rear but would also take bunk beds at the rear. A decent size living area / eating area would be good too.

Mine is a very nice motorhome to drive. Lovely modern white leather interior. Captains chairs that swivel in the front. Fixed island bed in the rear, large drop down bed at front. Loads of garage space. Oven, 3 hob burner, large fridge, freezer. I'm sure you all know the score so I'll leave it at that.

If you have any interest, I'd love to hear from you.

In the event of your plan not working you could try Caramotorhomes, they rent van's also and might be up for the idea of you renting one of their for sale van's if they have one you're interested in, try it before you buy it

Presumably something like one of these, is the sort you will be looking for in the future.
https://www.bunkcampers.com/en/campervans-for-hire/grande/
Or like this from Condron Campers in Carlow.
2021 SWIFT CHARISMA EDGE 486 R.H.D

Yes, either one of those would suit. I travelled up to take a look at the Swift Charisma Edge in Carlow the other day. Absolutely gorgeous van. A bit more than I want to spend though considering I don't use it all that much. But it's tempting!
Exactly why I'd like to try out a similar design before going and buying one.

I think that's where the hire company's come in. but also have a look in France for both Hire and a van replacement, bigger selection to look at,and a better price.

Any websites that you know of for having a look in France? Like the Done Deal equivalent? I've been having a look at a few German websites and found mobile.de to be very good. Haven't managed to find the equivalent for France.

I basically searched around, close enough to either of the ports, or an airport so I could go have a look, if I found something that fitted the bill. refine your search on sites to the criteria you want ( say A class, B class, 5 or 6 berth, 5 or 6 Belts, Layout, Min year, Max Price, Auto or manual,Make if you have a preference.
Otherwise you will get a Thousand Motorhome's you will never touch. ( don't show the other half of the equation anything you wouldn't buy O-) ;-) )
This is the list of sites I look at.
France. Occasion ( is second hand ). Vendu ( is sold )
Capicune = ( B class, over cab bed ).
Profile= ( B class low profile. )
Integril = ( a class like my one )

https://www.annonces-caravanin…g-car.html
( like DoneDeal includes private and dealer sales, can be a pain because they don't always take down the ones that are sold )
Btretagne camping cars. they have 5 different local locations. ( where I got ours )

CAMPING CAR HORIZON CAEN

Jacqueline camping car sales they also have 5 locations.

Thanks for all that. I'm considering going over and getting one myself. The task is a little daunting but I think it would be good to go through the process and see how it's done. Might be something I'd do again in the future. Or even look at bringing in a few.
Did you find that the value was still better to go abroad and bring it back, even after VRT and other expenses? I'm in two minds. sometimes I wonder whether it will even work out and cheaper. However, it's not necessarily getting a cheaper price that attracts me, there also seems like a much larger selection and you can get the exact spec and layout you want, as opposed to taking what you can get over here. What made you decide to bring one in from the continent as oppose to buying here?

I went looking in France because my buddy brought in, his first From Germany and 6 years, later made 7k more than he paid for it and he got his current one from France, just before Lock-down, without any trouble. there was very little here and some of the people here selling were on Magic Mushrooms with their prices and inability to supply the correct information, like how long is your van, answer "how would I check that" and when you finally get all the info you think you need ,and turn up to look at a van in the midlands, as arranged with a deposit in your pocket and you are told " a woman called in on Saturday and took it away." this in the middle of COVID Travel restrictions, ( I had permission to travel for work ,so I arranged to call when I was on a job near by.)

The Importing is not too difficult if you follow the rules as requested ( even the one's that are simply nonsense ) the big bonus is the quantity / selection of different Motorhomes, in Europe. On the road after everything, my one came in about 15% less similar one than here.

Be careful if you are importing a motorhome with a value of €100k + and insuring it with Dolmen as they will look for a tracker to be fitted before insuring it. I eventually managed to get them to provide temp insurance cover until I could get a tracker fitted in Ireland but we were at loggerheads until they gave this concession.

The cheapest brand new vans that I’ve seen are in Sofia under the laika brand, I was shocked to see what they are able to sell new vans at and still make profit,but it’s all relative due to wages and income in that particular territory

Yes I know Pat, she lives down the road. She does indeed bring in campers from Germany, If you get on Mobile.de and pick what you want, she will do the rest. Hab checks, mechanic checks, paperwork etc. etc.

As it turns out I bought a 2019 Autotrail T-720 up North. Only 5K miles on it.

Now I just need to get it registered and pay VRT. I set aside 10K for VRT so I'm hoping the guy at the NCT doesn't go crazy on the value.

Thanks for the replies everyone, appreciate the replies and help.... even though none of you agreed to swap with me!!

Begrudgingly, yes! But I'll hopefully get rid of the other one over the next couple of weeks.
