I have booked Rosslare to Bilbao on BF with pet friendly outside cabin end of September just over €800. Then Barcelona to Rome in owners suite with our dog 22 hour trip. €400! Grimaldi lines. ( never used Grimaldi before but they have a poor reputation, we will see!).
Then in October Bari to Patras 17 and half hour crossing. Camping in the motorhome with ehu and access to the deck (showers and toilets available) with Anek lines price €307. This includes 20% early bird discount and 25% membership of a camping club (recognised by Anek lines).
All crossings are one way, 2 adults 1 dog, motorhome <8 long.

That’s a lot of money on ferries but much less driving miles.
Also does make you think that BF have you over a barrel as no other operator does Ireland to Spain.

Quite correct Jamie ,the Irish travelling public, held hostage by RIP off Ferry Company's, while Blinkered Irish and EU. Poli-Tic's 🙈 keep their heads down in the nose bag and feed off our Taxes. We are the only island country in the world, whose Gioverning classes, do not seem to know we are sorounded by water.

I have seen 14 day all inclusive Caribbean cruises advertised for not much less than a Cork- Roscoff return.

We got a 14 night all inclusive cruise on the Queen Mary 2 last summer for about £€6k, for two of us. 1 night on a car ferry for €1k is outrageous in comparison.

So far we haven’t booked any ferries for this year.
Last year we went BF to Rosslare /Bilbao in May and home IF Cherbourg/Dublin in June and we might do the same ferries again, though we might just do Spain this year as it was cheaper than France.

There was a discussion last year about booking your outward and return ferry separately to do with flexi, When someone who had booked a return ticket and flexi didn’t work even though you pay flexi for both ways.
About to book BF possibly return at the moment the price is same for flexi as standard fare.
Quick glance in May €650 one way.
Do you open two separate bookings?.

It sounds like on another post that it is very busy on sites in Spain in Jan but does it become quieter again before high season.?

It is the same price to book two singles as one return. If you book a return flexi ticket you have to pay an admin fee to change the return once you have set off on the outward journey. If you book two singles and you change the homeward journey there is no admin charge to change dates only any extra charges would be if you selected a more expensive crossing.
I am told Spain gets quieter from February/March time.

How i envy those on the mainland of Europe who can just hop in their motorhomes and drive off the Spain or wherever, with no outlay for ferries and real unlimited travel flexibility

It is what is. That said I’ve lived in Ireland for 10 years now and in that time we’ve seen the route open between Ireland and Spain. IF, Stena, BF and DFDS all have direct routes to France. The Ferry price between GB and Ireland can be just at as expensive as Ireland to France. The crossing between Portsmouth and Plymouth to Spain on BF is almost the same as Ireland to Spain albeit BF don’t offer the loyalty membership in Ireland which is good for multiple trips.

I would like costs to come down and more routes and operators (what happened to the ferry to Vigo?)

I was talking to a chap on Friday who priced the ferry for two weeks in June to Spain who is now going to book Ryanair flts to Santander, hire a car for €400 for the two weeks and book his family of 5 into B&Bs and hotels instead for less than the ferry price alone and he has not wasted 3/4 days travelling on the ferry. I don’t blame him for a short holiday but for those of us lucky enough to be able to go away for months not weeks the ferry gets our hotel to the start of our journey.

While on the Ferry subject, keep in mind everyone, because of what happened in Rosslare last week, expect delays, loading in Europe and particularly with customs and security checks, upon arrival in Irish ports, it has the potential to be a nightmare. Similar to what the Dover/Calais was like a couple of years ago. Where they examined our Sprinter van, underneath, engine bay, every single compartment, locker, some of which wouldn't hold 2 sixpacks of beer. On both sides of the channel.
